Subject: Acrylic nails
Message: I have had acrylic nails put on with tips. I don't want to have them filled in as I've read that they don't do your natural nails any good. I am intending to grow them out but some of the acrylic nails are lifting at the base so water will be able to get under them. What should I do? Should I let them fall off naturally? I am thinking about putting on a nail growth/hardener on my natural nails as they grow to helop condition them. Any advice would be appreciated.

Message: If the nails are lifting and moisture is seeping between your natural nail and the artificial nail, you stand a chance of getting a fungus.
My suggestion is to remove the nails by soaking them off in acetone. Don't try to "pry or pop" them off as that will damage the natural nail. After you soak off the nails, get you some vitamin e oil and rub into the surface of the nails to replenish the moisture stripped away from using the acetone.

Message: I used to get my nails done professionally to stop from biting them, but I'd struggle with the same issues when I was trying to grow them out. I've found a sort of compromise that works pretty well and doesn't look terribly tacky.
When the nails start lifting in the edges, use cuticle clippers to break off the portion that is lifting. Be careful not to pull or tug at the part that is still attached though. Next, use a square buffer to buff down the acrylic so that it is not so obvious where the acrylic starts and stops. Be careful not to buff on your real nail, otherwise you'll make it even thinner. Buffing the acrylic makes it smoother and thinner to help blend things together better.
I do use nail polish remover and either clear coats or color to make the nails look more natural.
That's my suggestion.

Message: Tara,
i also agree with barbara and say soak them off. you stand a chance of knocking a loose acrylic nail and damaging your nail bed. i've had a nasty green fungal infection and believe me you don't want one. they will come off. it will take some time. don't "pop" them off. using a hardener/strengthner will not help your own nail at the base. it will just dry them out. use oil or barbaras growth formula.

Message: Saz,
Do you believe in fate? Divine intervention? I think you've been led to this site by a higher intelligence than the one you're seeing at your local nail salon.
My suggestion is to take the acrylics off. They are not good for your nails and they do not even look nice. They look chunky wooden planks. I guess if you're a chunky wooden plank kinda gal, you like them. They are so unhealthful. Especially the lifting part. You're getting all kinds of bacteria, fungus, food, and all kinds of unmentionable goo under there. I bet they smell bad too. I'm gagging just thinking about it.
(by the way, I used to be right where you are)
Please, take them off. You can easily find directions for SAFE removal here on this site. Then, read the posts and see how many of us have finally gotten OFF the acrylic band wagon and are LOVING natural nails! That's what THIS site is about, natural nails.

Message: saz,
the lifting will eventually lead to the greenies-bacteria growing, getting trapped between the nail bed and the acrylic. it will lead to infection and eventual lifting of your nail bed. the nail bed is thinned out in the beginning and drilled every two weeks. what's left underneath will make you want to cry. anything that requires an acid primer every fill is NOT in the best interest of your nails health. your nail beds are oily. they will never stop lifting.

Message: Saz - Cheryl has a good point. Your nails might be too oily for the product to adhere well. I used to go every 3 weeks without lifting. My acrylics probably adhered too well because my natural nail started lifing from the beds. Either way, the "greenies" put you on course where there is no turning back and you have to remove the nails. Take my word for it, this is better to do preventively. Can save you a dermatologist visit!

Message: thank you leah for the site. maybe all the acrylic wearers can take note and go there for their answers. this is and always has been a natural nail site. we're here for ladies who wish to remove them, but do not condone the wearing of them in the least. most, but not all of us, have our own acrylic horror stories.
