Subject: slammed in door - but wont fall off?
Message: i slammed my fingernail in a door almost a month ago. the fingernail has deattached itself pretty much all the way back to the matrix thing (the half moon) the upper half of the nail is purple from the dried blood, and the rest is slightly discolored. i can see under my nail and lift it up a bit but it wont fall off. ive had to clip it once since the accident but it looks like its not growing, any ideas on what will happen or what i should do?

Message: Ok well never been in that situation and I would have to see it. Thats maybe why you should see a doctor. My father used to pull his off but that might hurt too much. It takes about 6 onths for a nail to grow back and so if there are any real issues then I wouldn't worry.

Message: really depends on how hard you smashed it and whether you did damage to the matrix-the actual living tissue beneath the hard nail. you will probably just have to wait and see.

Message: The same thing happened to me several months ago. The new nail grew under the old nail. I could lift it and clip it a little (very tender). During the day I bandaged it so I wouldn't damage it further. It finally lifted up enough where I could pull it the rest of the way off (took some skin with it--ouch!). This was one of the most annoying injuries I've had. It too a LONG time to grow out and didn't look very pretty. Now, the new nail is not a full length and the nailless tip is still sensitive.
