Message: I was hoping to get help w/my finger nail discoloration problem. Fingernails are of a darker color, both toenails & fingernails. I saw my doc & he gave me a referral to someone else. I also got a blood test as well. The doc I got a referall to informed me that it was a type of fungus & prescribed a cream plus a new kind of shampoo to soak nails in. She also stated that it would take a while to cure. I've followed orders of treatment for about 6 months now & no change. The only thing that it seemed to help with was that sometimes some of my toenails would split. Could someone give me some kind of info/direction/answers please?

Message: Hi guys, maybe you can help. My thumb nails are lifting off of my fingers. My manicurist thinks it's because I have had acrylic on my nails for 8 years and that I should take them off to let them breathe. Someone else told me it might be fungus although you can't see any discoloration. She said I should see a dermatologist. What do you think?

Message: Hi Julia,
Glad you found us here! You'll find that the ladies here are very supportive and you'll also find that we encourage natural nails and discourage acrylics or fake nails of any kind.
If I were you I would remove the acrylics right away and have a dr. look at those nails to see what might be the problem. If you're not seeing any discoloration that doesn't mean there isn't something else equally as nasty as a fungus going on.
Feel free to post any questions you have and please let us know how it's going with those nails!

Message: julia,
your nails don't need to breathe. the only time nails need air is when a fungus is growing underneath and air is what will kill it first.
your nails have been thinned out over the past 8 years to the point of there being nothing left to keep the nail bed attached to your thumbs anymore. it will eventually happen to all of them. i don't believe you have any fungus problem going on. i'm not going to say don't go to the dr., but you need to remove the rest of the acrylics. the dr. will tell you the same. i have been through acrylics, as have a few of us here. they will ruin and completely thin out the nail bed. sometimes sooner than later. nail techs don't want to ruin their repeat business. they will tell you what they need to in order to get you back. do what's right for you and your nails health.
