Subject: curling fingernails
Message: My nails are filed square-shaped. On a couple of them, the corners curl in a bit. This only started a couple of years ago whe I grow them long. Why is this? And what can I do about it?

Message: I also have curling fingernails and would like to know what causes this. I have had it for years and it is so hard to make them look nice. Also my finger tips get cold when I use fingernail polish on them. Pleaase anybody out there have the answer to these problems? Thanks. Jackie

Message: Sandrine, it sounds like your nails are dehydrated. Your nails are the same thing as your hair and if you don't condition your hair, it goes bad... same with nails. Try to find a product called "Solar Oil" and apply it to your nails everyday. If you wash your hands a lot, do it at LEAST twice a day. You can find it at department store salons or at a hair salon that has a nail tech. This oil is specifically blended to penetrate the layers of the nail to keep it flexible so it won't "snap" or curl. Other oils have molecules that won't penetrate as well. It does wonders for cuticles too!
Karen, sometimes that kind of curling is hereditary, you might mention it to the doctor next time your baby has a check up though... it can be a vitamin deficiency at that age... but my kids toe nails do it too, so do their dad's and paternal grandmothers.
Jackie, Follow what I told Sandrine, it will take time to really show if your nails are good and hard, but it will work, especially for the new growth coming in at the cuticle. You could also try warming some olive oil in a bowl and soaking in that. It's a GREAT treatment for the dryness.
About the polish thing... sometimes people have more sensative nail beds and can feel the "coolness" of the polish better than others--I'm one of those people too, that's one good reason I've been wearing acrylics for the last 9 years (makes my skin crawl and my nails are super thin). It doesn't help that for the last 6 years it's been my job!
Good luck guys! For helpful home hints and other stuff with nails check out my site at:

Message: my friends son has very thin and weak nails. Also he has vertical lines in every nail. I was wondering if this could be from a lack of vitamins.

Message: It's very possible that it's a vitamin thing. But on the thin side of the conversation, thinness can just be him. The white is probably vitamins.
My natural nails are paper thin, and cut like razors. My mother had good strong nails that rarely broke, my nails just tear. And my kids have strong nails. they probably got their nails from my mother, but I didn't.

Message: I bought my Solar Oil, in the pharmacy, Genovese/eckerds to be exact. But I've also seen them in Rite Aide and Duane Reade. The small bottles costs about 8 to 10 bucks. If it works? I guess for many it probably will, for me it really didn't. But try it.

Message: Mine are the same way. Funny thing is, it can't be a vitamin deficiency because some of them are perfectly normal. Only four of them really bend and/or curl. The other six are perfectly normal. Explain that one??? I'll try the solar oil and let you know if it works. Suffice to say that you are not alone.

Message: I had that happen too and it ended up that I was seriously anemic. The doctor said low iron causes nails to curl...so have some blood testing done if you're worried.
