Subject: daughter's nail falling off
Message: Hello there,
I have a 7 yr old daughter that had been diagnosed with "hand foot and mouth disease" about a month ago. She would get blisters on her hands and feet, and little sores in her mouth. The Dr said there was no way to treat it, but to let it run its course. Now, 6 weeks later her fingernails are starting to fall off and she is growing new ones into the old on about five fingers and 2 of her toes. Does anyone have a clue as to what this is? We took her to the Dr today and he said that in his 30 yrs of practice he has never seen such a thing. Tomorrow to the Dermatologist we will go.
I read in this forum about simular things, but never read a diagnosis, or even a guess as to what is wrong with her nails.
Any clue?
Roger

Message: Update on this subject. The dermatologist says that her nails are being replaced because she had several viral infections (fifths, psoriasis and hand, foot and mouth) close together about 6 weeks ago. He explained that because her body was so overloaded that it stopped making nails (and hair). A condition called Onycholysis. Most of her 20 nails have been replaced with healthy new ones. Some are still working their way out and off. He said she would most likely loose her hair also, but that hasn't happened yet. It would be a big loss since her hair is 2 feet in length from the crown. If it does fall out we plan to donate it to Locks of Love. I hope this information is helpful.

Message: Now in review of last years events, our Daughter's hair never fell out. She in fact donated her hair to the "Locks of Love" foundation this year and is doing wonderful. If anyone out there is going through this terrible trial, know that you will get through it without any long lasting effects. Feel free to write with any questions. We have received a few questions since posting the first statement over a year ago.

Message: My daughter is 2 and she also had hand foot and mouth disease a few months ago. A couple weeks ago she started losing her fingernails, I thought it was because they were smashed in a door or something, but there was no bruises. Now she has toenails coming off. Did your daughter's come off from the top of the nail where the cuticle is? THANKS,Devon

Message: I did just happen to read through the old messages just now and see that we are still active.
Echo's (my Daughter) nails did falll off from the cutical and was somewhat painless. We all worry more as parents than needbe sometimes. Please be comforted in knowing that you will get through this small event in no time. My gal is a bouncing baby 8 yr old now, and as bitchy as the next girl. She fills me with love, laughter, and an occasional pain in the ass most of the time.
Oh ya, the nail thing.... wait it out, it's not as bad as we all think. your kid will get through it. And I bet with not much pain.
It is just kinda freaky to us all losing a part of our being that just doesn't happen normally.
It will grow back in no time. Just care for the soft area and keep them from chewing or biting the area.
I will try and check this site more often.

Message: My son (3) had his thumbnail fall off recently and we suspected him biting on it at night, though we never saw him with it in or near his mouth. It fell off from the base and is now growing back in, but 3 of his other nails are now falling off from the base also. I have noticed a white line on the nail like it has been damaged before it starts to fall off but none of them appear to be infected or bruised at all. Very weird, in reading these other posts I guess the dermatologist would be who we should go see? This is really weird and I am just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone and what the result was with you or your child?!?
ANY help would be appreciated.....Thanks!

Message: I HAVE AN 8MONTH OLD LITTLE GIRL AND A FEW WEEKS AGO 2 OF HER NAILS STARTED TO FALL OF FROM THE BASE, SHE DOESN'T ACT LIKE IT HURTS HER AND THEY ARE NOT INFECTED. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS WAS HAPPENING SHE PULLS HERSELF UP ON ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING SO THOUGHT MAYBE SHE JUST SMASHED THEM OR GOT THEM CAUGHT ON A STRING FROM A BLANKET OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I AM STARTING TO WONDER IF THEY ARE GOING TO GROW BACK, I KNOW THIS SOUNDS STUPID BUT DO YOU THINK IT IS SOMETHING I SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT???
THANKS STEPH

Yes, this is something to be concerned over...If you have not taken your beby to the doctor yet, then my question is why not?... We have 5 childresn and there is not one that ever had something like this happen... At least in my case it was not a normal pare of my bebies progressing. Please let us know what you find out from you doctor. I will be most interested to learn what this is...
