Subject: Wierd Shape &Curl-Middle Nail Only
Message: I am almost 40 years old, and I can literally remember having this same looking nail in elementary school! My middle finger ONLY has a VERY different shape than the other nails. The cuticle has a VERY different shape than all of the rest of my nails. I grows different, look s different, and begins to curl downward at the part where the nail actually detatches from the finger. As a result, I keep my nails short. I am not as concerned about the curling part, as I have seen that before. BUT... the tendency for this nail to grow slightly sidewaystoward my thumb, as opposed to straight out is very strange. I keep a colored polish on it, so that you can't see that I have filed it to "make it" appear formed straight. I make this sound like a gross abnormality, but I am only trying to present the facts. Has ANYONE, ANYWHERE ever experienced such? Now for the surprising part. BOTH middle fingernails of BOTH hands are identical, but JUST the middle ones the other eight nails are very normal. And, no, I have never experienced trama to both middle fingers on both hands. Thanks for any insight.

Message: Deborah,
It seems to me you just have very small birth defect. I've seen some people where just their thumbs are oddly shaped or just one finger nail is growing weird. Not much you can do about it. If it really bothers you, you might try artificial nails on just those two fingers.

Message: I have the same thing but probably not as severe. both my middle fingernails curve downward on the side toward the thumb. The nail appears normal on the nail bed but shows the curve when it gets past the bed of the nail. All of my other nails are normal. I used to wear artificial nails and wondered why the middle nail always pulled away and after removing them and really looking at the nails I have realized that it was not how the nail was applied it was how my nails bed on the middle finger. I hear once that this was a symptom of something but I did not pay enough attention and now I"m wondering what it was.

Message: just the past couple of years mmy fingernails curl downward, not the thumbnails, just the fingernails. is there some sort of vitamin deficiency, that causes this problem. they don't have to be any length at all. they are fine as long as they are still wet , like after shower or bath but within a few hours they go to curling downward again. can something be done to alleviate this problem

Message: Indy Nail Pro,
That is absolutely ill advised. NO FAKES ALLOWED!
embrace the fact that you are just a bit different from everyone else on the face of Gods green earth. My be if you keep the nails filed to a nice moderate length, they will all balance out in appearance. Polish only draws attention to the hands and nails. If you feel you just must polish, try a clear top coat or pearl effect tint! That should help to minimize the differences in the nails.

Message: Gio,
I am not a doctor but why don't you ask your doctor about the
downward curl of the fingernails the next time you have an
appointment? Since this is a change in just the last couple years,
it's always good to bring any change in your physical appearance
to the attention of your doctor. I have heard of a condition called
clubbing of the nails but have never seen it so I couldn't
describe it to you. I believe that the finger itself becomes
thickened and then the nail curves downward over it. I have read
that clubbing of the nails could indicate lung or heart problems.
But again, I am not a medical professional, but I am just saying I
would mention any changes to your doctor, because vitamin
deficiencies can also cause nail changes, so why not get a good
professional opinion?
