 Subject: nail damage from acrylics

My nails are so damaged from wearing acrylics for so long that I am actually scared I will lose my nails. They are white from being pulled from my nail bed and may have a fungus. They actually HURT! I realize that the only cure is to be patient and let the damaged part grow out but is there ANYTHING I can do in the meantime? HELP!!!!!

Oooh! Sounds awful. I was never satisfied with the way my nails looked and I got many compliments when I wore acrylics and those cheap artificial nails. I eventually ended up with a fungus. Vanity, I think, can be our worst enemy. Believe me, Jean, I sympathize with you, although I didn't let my situation go that far. It's true that you should stop wearing them immediately. I would recommend seeing a doctor. The treatment is very costly unless you have a prescription plan. But, especially in your case, seeing as you actually have PAIN, you should call your doctor. I also have nail damage from acrylics, My nails are spliting down the middle in a "V" shaped form and GREEN in color, and pulling away from my actual finger.They now have a funny shape to them. I have been to a doctor, and I DO NOT have a fungis, he said it would make it easier to treat if I did. He wants me to remove the acrylics and use a solition of clorox bleach and water, to scrub the Color away. Is this OK to do? My hands are now so ulgy without my beautiful nails, that i am just sick about it. Any quick fixes? I'm known for my nails, and now feel lost without them. HELP Me !!!!!!!!!!

although im only 13 years old. i think that makes it worst, cause i get my nails done all the time, and now i have layers on my nails that just peel off. plus, if i even just bump them they will brake wright off. what do i do????? plz help

Ok, lets stop freaking out! We dont need nails to be pretty or whatever yall think! I have been getting my nails done for 6 years without any problems and then BOOM i went to a new place and my nails had fungus .... all of them but 3.. bad green fungus.. she said i didnt have to take my nails off.. but i did... and it GREW out i didnt put on teh medicane liek they said didnt do anything and it went away...then i put the nails back on after a month or two and then it came back not bad on one finger ..still got it there but took the nails off and im still not taking any medication.. it will grow out! it is nthing to worry about.. just paint over it.. no one will ever tell.. no one could tell what was wrong with me .. i simply told everyone i just wanted them off.. no one has to know the reason... i stil have them off and its saving me money! THINK of the MONEY you can spend otherwise.... i figured it out in the last 2 years i spent $2,500 on nails! just think i could have went on vacation or a big shopping spree... just think of what yall can do with teh extra money.. i know how yall feel though because i was always known at school wiht the girl with teh pretty nails but it doesnt mean taht you will never have them agian.. its scary but.. another word of advise i give yall.. when yall get nails done.. NO COLOR>. just do french or american.. this is the mistake i made and i couldnt see the fungus til it was too late... this last time i saw it with the american and french.....that was a big help to not get as bad as it was.. well i hope i helped yall

You're right, acrylics are so bad for your nails!
It's a shame you had so much damage, so many problems, and spent so much money but THAT is the nature of the acrylic beast!!

Acrylic, or any other topical treatments are of absolutely no benefit, except to the nail *salon* $$$$$$$$.
Natual Nails will always be the smartest, safest, and least expensive way to go. They should be treated with lots of TLC as though they were fine jewelry at the fingertips.

I'll add to this, eventhough it's an older topic and I hope the original poster has solved her problem. There is NOTHING you can do to prevent the nails from lifting futher from the bed once this has started if you still are wearing the acrylics. I struggled with that over a month hoping they would grow a bit an reseal. Nope, it continued to advance, then moisture would collect underneath and I ended up with an infection. The only way for them to reseal to the beds is to let a new bare nail grow back in without the pressure and rigidity of an acrylic.

After hearing all these dreadful stories I'm soooo glad that I didn't do the acrylic thing long. Thank goodness I never had to deal with fungus since I didn't do the acrylic thing long. Gosh, am I saving money and I like that. I'm sure my hubby likes that too although he won't mention this. Actually people should be more impressed with natural nails because they really take more effort but it nowhere costs as much as acrylics. It appears acrylics are a "quick fix." With this NGF I have "10" gorgeous nails and I'm more than a happy camper. If nails have fungus I don't know if you should use the NGF yet but always keep that in mind.
