Subject: Acetone Allergy

Message:
I wish to have acrylic nails applied for the holidays. I am allergic to acetone. Is there another acrylic nail removal method which is safe and effective? I am scheduled to have the nails applied on 11/25/03. I would truly appreciate your recommendations or suggestions. Thank you!!

Bev, The only method of removing acrylic is through soaking it off with acetone or filing & buffing it off. Soaking is a much gentiler procedure but if you have an allergy, filing them off will be the only solution. Note however this can be damaging to the natural nail.

I have recently discovered that my nails react poorly to acetone. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this same phenomenon. When I had my nails done last, the shop used acetone to remove existing nail polish. The polish they put on afterward began bubbling up as it dried. This happened through 4 consecutive manicures. The day was humid but even after sitting in the air conditioning the whole time, the polish continued to bubble. To the salon's credit, they are offering me a free manicure but I have never heard of anyone having this reaction. Can anyone else tell me if it is possible that acetone was the culprit in this?

donna,
never heard of acetone causing that kind of reaction before. people can have reactions to the acetone with redness and itching, but it doesn't seem to happen very often. the only reason i've ever had bubbles in my polish was due to the coats of polish being applied too thick. maybe it's the base coat that's starting the whole reaction. i would say, go for the free manicure and wash your hands really well after they have removed your polish, or better yet, remove it at home with non-acetone remover, then before you let them polish have them swipe them with rubbing alcohol to remove any remover residue and oils. i'm sure the manicurist won't mind if you bring a small bottle of it with you. they want good results too.
