Subject: lost toenail

Message:
Hi. I hurt both my big toes hiking. One got so
infected, the doctors freaked out when they
saw it and surgically removed the nail. They
said it would grow back, but it's been 2
months since the surgery and there's no sign
of a new nail yet. I've heard it can take up to a
year to grow a toenail back, but shouldn't I
being seeing SOMETHING by now? Does this
mean something went wrong and it's never
growing back? Please help! I'm really upset.
thanks!

Message:
First the matrix, where the nail grows out, needs to heal ,this could take quite some time and after that it could still take a long time before you see a nail, because a nail only grows a couple of mm a month. But if it makes you feel better, just go see a physician, he or she could tell you more.

My son has just lost a finger nail following an accident that crushed it. The doctors have said it may not grow back and this has worried him. I would be interested to know how your toe repaired. Would you let me know? Thanks.

Finger and Toe nails are amazing things and from my expirence are quite resiliant. When the new nail begins to grow back, it will not look like a normal nail. It will be thin and tapered at the end, but as time goes by it will begin to look more normal.

And yes it can take a year for a toenail to get back to normal but a fingernail should only take about 6 months.

I lost a toenail this weekend...

Message:
I was pulling a card table out of the closet and pulled it right into my vacuum cleaner then over my second toe. I bent the toenail back and don't know what to do. It is dislocated from my toe but is still barely attached near the cuticle. I'm scared to take it off! What should I do? I've been cleaning it and wrapping it up with gauze and lots of Neosporin.

About 4 weeks ago I was jumping off of the trampoline and I stubbed my big toe. It was right on my biggest toe and I hit the fronf of it, forcing the back part (beneath the cuticle) UP!! The whole nail is going to fall off!! When will this one come of...It is completely black and really freaking me out. When will I get a new one?? P.S. Should I pull it off?

Hi, I lost my big toe nail recently during a taekwondo practice. RIght now, my toe is still kind of bloody but I think the blood flow is slowing down. I was wondering, how long does it take for the skin to grow back so that I can continue my tkd training? LIke how long would it take until I can kick with it? Please, please, let me know! Thanks! I'm really concerned because I have a tournament coming up.

RE: lost toenail

Message:
hi. i am a chronic nail biter. i gradually rip my entire nail off due to biting them. i literally have NO nail left. i remove the entire nail and all that is left is the nail bed. doctors always tell me that if i damage the moon (the white part of the nail near the cuticle) then they will be damaged 4ever. well i always rip the moon off too, and my nails ALWAYS grow back! they grow back just fine and they r not damaged at all. it only takes one month for my whole nail to grow bac. i think it grows so fast because theyre used to needing to repair themselves so frequently? i assume normal pplz nails will take longer. dont worry they always grow back even if it takes ages. occasionally mine will take 4 or 5 months to show signs of new growth, but this is only if i rip the nail out BELOW the cuticle, but that stills grows back eventually. dont worry they always grow back i swear!!! i also have ingrown toenails and got my bigtoe nail surgically removed, it grew back in a year or so but it took about 4 months to show signs of growth coz so much is removed, but it will grow back!!!!!!
