Subject: swollen sore fingernails...ouch!

Message:
The skin surrounding my fingernails is always swollen, and very pink, its like they're constatnly infected or something. The cuticles seem to grow really fast, but the are alway too sore to groom. I figure this is a diet issue, I wonder if anyone can help, or suggest what the problem may be caused by...

Maybe it would be a good idea for you to have a a manicurist show you how to properly apply a manicure. If you cut too deep, the skin in the cuticle area will become thick and infected. Don`t do anything in the cuticle area when your skin is swollen and just let it heal.

i have taken your advice and just let them go to heal in their own time, and its seems to have made a little difference, but it seems that maybee the damage is too far and I made need to help any healing along. Do you have a suggestion?

You just have to be a little patient, I know it`s annoying and you want it to be gone tommorow, but it takes time to heal, it can take several weeks. After that, when you apply a proper manicure, it shouldn`t come back at all and I think that`s worth waiting for. You could try soaking your fingertips in milk for a couple of minutes each day, but if the redness and the swelling gets worse you have to stop. When the infection is (almost)gone you can start using cuticle oil. If you do remove loose skin, don`t remove everything always keep a couple of mm distance. Your skin will always be extra senitive in the area where you`ve cut too deep.
This does not have anything to do with a wrong diet, but if you feel that your diet isn`t balanced, you can always use a vitamin/mineral supplement. Good luck and, as I said before, if you can`t get the hang of applying a good manicure, just go see a manicurist, it`s perfectly normal and you only have to see her once, so it shouldn`t cost a lot of money.

Unfortunatly i disagree with "anonymous". The condition sounds like "paronychia" pronounced (PAR-O-NICK-IA). Paronychia is common among people whose hands are continually in water. It often results is inflammation, pus, and pain in and around the cuticle. It is an infection! It is usually NOT caused by diet. I as Nail Tech i would advise you to see your doctor. He can give you a better insight as to what is causing it. And possibly give you a cream to eliminate the ongoing infection. THere are other nail disorders possible and this is why a nail tech should never encourage you to treat it yourself!!
And you are correct, this can cause permanent damage.

If you disagree with me, that`s your good right, but I advise you that when you do, you read what I write more carefully. Not once do I say that it has anything to do with a diet,it was just some general advise on the side and a good immune system etc is always an advantage when an infection needs to heal. The advise I`ve given deon comes from my experience as a manicurist/beauty specialist and now as a nailtech. If what I`ve advised doesn`t work, there is always time to go see a doctor. I do agree with you that there are cases where a nail tech shouldn`t give advise and refer a client to go see a doctor/dermatologist, that`s what you learn and when I think that`s the case, then that`s what I do.

Thankyou everyone, for your advise. I am grateful for a couple of differing opinions as it gives me a broader rage of possibilties when treating my problem. I have been told somethihg called 'neosporin' may help. Thanx

damaged quick?

Message:
I made the mistake of having my husband cut my fingernails when I moved from a job in the city to a small farm. He cut my nails too close to the quick. Now the quick is very sensitive and so deep that I can't reach it to clean my nails. They always appear dirty, or rather are always dirty.

Is there any way to rectify this condition? Can the quick recover and return to a decent heighth? I thank you for any help I can get.

PS I am 65 years old and take heart medications.

JO

joanne,
yes, they will heal and eventually grow out again. i bit mine far, far down into the "quick" for many decades. i now have nice, healthy, flexible nails. i wouldn't try and "dig" out any dirt right now while they are sore and sensitive. you don't want to accidentally dig in too deep and start an infection. soak them in warm, soapy water and then pour some hydrogen peroxide over them to try and flush out some of the dirt. you will get some length on them in a week or so and the dirt accumulating won't be so bad. have some patience, don't dig under them and keep them moisturized and they will recover.

I might be stupid but what is the "quick?" Sounds really, really painful though.
