Subject: black or brown streaks
Message: I'm curious to find out if black an brown streaks are a common occurance. I'm 33 and noticed last month that my left thumb had 2 brown streaks running up the lenght of the nail. Apporx 4mm long. I thought that they might be a splinter or something, but since I don't work around wood all that much. I watched them grow out over the next few weeks. Nothing more showed up until today, on my right hand my middle finger and thumb both have streaks within the nail bed. Exactly like before. I've done some research and now I'm panicing because these indicators are sometimes found in people that get melonoma. I donot work outside and when I do go out it's not for any extended length of time. I've checked myself all over for moles, just in case. Any help that ya'll might be able to lend would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Chris

Message: Its called melanonychia and its most prevalent in african americans although caucasians can get them as well. I have the same problem and I do not know what to do about it. It's embarrassing, so I always have to put nail polish on that one nail. It's very annoying.

Message: I also have black streaks, however, mine almost resemble a light film around the cuticles. I do not work out side and it only shows up every so often. What is this? I have also found the melonoma sites.

Message: I've also experienced these black streaks (look like splinters) under the nail bed. They seem to come in the thumb or index finger. Since I've had them, off and on, for some time and haven't had any medical problems, I assume they're some kind of deficiency or something. They are strange. Anyone who has any real answer -- I'd be very curious to know where they come from.
Thanks.

Message: Andrea,
no, they aren't a deficiency, just a condition called melanonychia. happens to dark skinned people and ocassionally caucasians too. nothing you can take to prevent them. they are just there.
