Subject: curling nails
Message: I noticed that my nails curl along the line where the nail lifts from the skin. I had several nails that did this. So I experimented with pushing the skin in more of a straight line across, and now those nails grow straight. It doesn't feel good, but it looks much better.

Message: I have the same problem, and it looks weird when your nails grow and then curls. My nails curl downwards. Is that what happened to yours? I will try your suggestion as it sounds reasonable.

Message: Hi guys!
Really you shouldn't be trying to treat this yourself. You should really ask your doctor. Some of these nail abnormalities can be a sign of an underlying heath condition.

Message: Right - firstly talk to a professional about this!
My middle nail on my left hand curls very slightly and is only really noticeable if you're looking. However it is more noticeable with polish on and is difficult with acrylics on as it curls away from the acrylic tip (dirt gets stuck behind etc and makes it look dirty. My manacurist noticed and asked if any injury had occured on the base of my nail. I thought for a bit then remembered - my horse had trodden on my finger a long long time ago. I couldn't remember if my nail had been like it before but my manacurist said that if any damage is done to the nail plate (just below finger nail but before first bend in finger) then your nail will always grow "funny". It may be the same for you but i recommend talking to a nail professional as they will be able to advise you what to do.

Message: My nails are terrible. They are so thin, so flaky, that I can't even keep nails past the quick. I have never had good nails, but now is the worst. I am a 72 year old female. Is there anything I can do that is not expensive to remedy this problem. I am not interested in having beautiful long nails, just healthy ones. Thank you for a reply. Shirley Warnock

Message: Mine curve up a bit at the ends and my doctor said it was because my nails had been trained to do that after years of picking and pulling at them. I don't know exactly what to do about it myself either.

Message: there's not a whole lot anyone can do about curling nails. most people who believe it's caused by a vitamin defficency would have to be so defficient in that vitamin that it would show up in other aspects of their health first. it is due to compulsive biting and picking of the nails and cuticles, to acrylic abuse, sometimes the results of infections, heredity, and injury. they might soften up in the shower enough to reshape, but as soon as they dry back to being curved they go. go have a reputable manicurist look at them, not one who only does acrylics. that will just give you even worse problems. maybe a regular manicure with someone shaping, filing and gently pushing back the cuticles can help or at least offer suggestions on what or if anything can be done.

Message: Shirley,
i'm afraid age has a lot to do with the health of nail beds mostly. losing moisture tends to show up very quickly in our skin and nails. i'm sure you know that. i'm 43, but there are parts of me now that are so much dryer than they were just 5 years ago. you can have healthier nails either by using the formula from this site or rub vitamin e oil in them everyday as many times a day as you can. they need moisture, and the ability to hold their own moisture in. you say they are flaky. have you ruled out the possibility of a fungal infection. once we get them, they are nearly impossible to get rid of on our own.
