Message: These lines could be something called "splinter hemorrhages." You can do
a search for that term.
I have had dark lines on and off for a couple years. They look like little
splinters under the nail, close to the tip.
My general practice doctor gave me an anti-fungal cream (ketokonezol, also
known as nizoral). I might not have spelled it right, but it is available at
half-strength over-the-counter. It helps a lot, so there may be a fungal
element to the problem.
I can feel a sharp pain when a line is about to appear, so I apply the cream
and nip it in the bud. If a line appears, I put the cream on before the line
gets too big. The line stops getting bigger, but it does not dissappear -- it
just grows out with the normail nail.
I have not been to a dermatologist. But a dermotologist will probably know
much more about this than will a general doctor.

Message: splinter hemorrhages can also be a sign of heart disease. Check out that website for more information.

Message: I have dark vertical lines but they are about 2-3mm wide and run all the way from the base cuticle to the tip of my finger. It looks like someone drew a vertical line in black felt pen then tried to wipe it off.
Has anyone got any answers yet?

Message: I have them too, mostly on my thumb nails, they look like tiny splinters around the tips, sometimes i can use tweezers and pull them out, and thy look like little slices of brown? I am only 22, and hope its not a sign of heart disease, I have been looking and found website that said it is fungal from a liver problem. I dont drink, smoke nothing bad, so i am confused, any one know any more answers?

Message: yeah, i just recently stopped bitting my nails and 9 of them have these little "splinters" at the tops. I'm only 21, and am very stressed about them. I did find this explaination tho, which i think i will accept for now, as i don't have any of te signs and symptoms of endocarditis.
the lines are really thin, not like any of the pictures i have seen. They don't hurt at all.
Maybe it is just trauma from being biten for about 19 years. I HOPE SO ANYWAYS

This is exactly what I have and I can't find an answer. They are not splinters. They are just as "C" described, like a marker was wiped off my nail. Anyone know why this has happened? It's on 1/2 my middle finger, 1/2 my ring finger and now two of my toes.
