Subject: Melanoma under finger nail
Message: Hello, I was just researching the internet for skin cancer growth under a finger nail, since this is what a loved one was diagnosed.
I was reading some posts here and observed that many don't realize, melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, can grow under the fingernail, toe nail....it is called subungual melanoma....it usually starts out as a dark streak on the nail, or a black like dot....if anything like that is seen please see a dermatologist that specializes in melanoma...don't blow it off and don't let your doctors either...

Message: A friend of mine has a growth under his thumb NAIL AND HAS CAUSED HIS NAIL TO SPLIT VERTICALLY.
I was wondering if this causes nail splits. It may be something else. I know it is subungual, but not exactly sure what

Message: I noticed a few months ago what looks like a black steak coming up beside my cuticle now it is all the way up my cuticle. I noticed to that I'm getting the same thing on my other hand on the same finger. Could this be melanoma you think? It is really weird looking.

Message: Thank you for the warning, Tashia. I have a greyish streak on my thumb nail, but I don't think it's very serious. But I'll see a dermatologist just in case. Thanks again. :)

Message: Last year I noticed a thin pink streak running the length of my fingernail. As time went on it grew bigger and my nail humped up over it and was weak and splitting at the end. It was never any color other than pink (nearly flesh colored) and never had any pain. I went into a dermatologist and he removed my nail and did a biopsy. Much to my horror, it was melanoma. 4 days later I was in surgery and had the top 2/3 of my finger removed as well as the lymphnodes associated with that finger. They were clean so all is well for now. What I learned: melanoma doesn't have to be black, brown or grey. It can have no pigment at all. DON'T WAIT !!! If your Doctor says you don't need physical therapy but you think you do--push him or make the appointment yourself. There are many things they can do to help reduce swelling, pain, scarring, sensitivity and adema. And let yourself cry---loosing a portion of one's body can be tramatic and devastating.

Message: I also have a light grey line on my thumb nail. I recently read that subungual melanoma usually starts at the nail bed. Mine is about 3 cm from my nail bed and the color is very light. I plan on getting it checked anyways in a little while unless it miraculously goes away...

Message: I was recently diagnosed and treated for a melanoma in-situ under my fingernail. It just looked like a brown streak and I didn’t think anything of it. I ignored it for 6 years and then a dermatologist happened to see it. Luckily the doctors believe that it is cured. I permanently lost about 1/2 of my thumbnail. The other half is supposed to grow back eventually. What I have learned: Melanoma affects all skin types and is not always caused by sun exposure.

Message: Hi Kate,
It is indeed wonderful to know that you only lost half the nail when you stood to lose so much more. I am glad you shared your story so that others may benefit from you knowledge.
Cancers, any type, and there are many, can sneak up without warning or provocation. You don't have to be a sun worshiper, or even a smoker to be host to this hideous disease. It can come in by way of breathing city congested air with the carbons and all! Even healthy country living will not always guarantee you will be free of the disease. Take great care and stay with us about your future health. Thanks again for sharing.
