Subject: ingrown fingernail
Message: Hi. I have a painful 3rd finger and I have had it for the last 2 weeks. I have recently noted a redish color on the edge of the finger under the nail. I believe it may be an ingrown nail, but I am only in my thirties. I but a needle under the nail to lift it and I have pierced a bit of the skin. This bright yellow stuff came pouring out everytime I squeeze it. I hve tried to cut a bit of the nail, but I could only manage the top half of the nail - not the root. I am wondering what I should do - self-treat or go to the doctor or what.
Regards Andrew

Message: go to a doctor. an infected finger is what your are going to end up with. the nail that is being shoved into the tissue isn't going to suddenly "free" itself and trying to cut it with unsterilized scissors or clippers is just asking for an infection, which is a whole lot worse to treat.

warm soapy water for a while
