Subject: Deep nail ridges and scarring
Message: Hello,
I am 19 years old. I have picked my fingers as long as I can remember (since I was a young child) and I now have DEEP ridges in my thumb nails. I pick at the hang nails of my thumbs on a daily basis from habit and stress/nervousness. My thumbs are ugly. They are scarred all the way around the nail and my nails grow crooked, uneven, with deep ridges. It is very embarassing to do anything with my hands in front of people. I always have to hide them. I have heard that what makes this happen is the matrix at the bottom of your nail which are the cells that make your nails grow. When your nails grow like mine, the matrix is damaged. And I read that if there has been constant damage to the matrix, nothing can be done. Is this true?? I would do anything in the world to have normal thumbnails. This is probably the biggest self-esteem blower I have. Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Message: Joan,
Nail Ridges are not always caused by poor vitamin intake. Your problems could be age or genetics. However, there are two sure ways to diminish the appearance of those ridges. Use a very fine grit file on top of your nails to smooth them (but don't get too crazy). Then use a ridge filling base coat when wearing polish.

Message: AFTER CHECKING OUT THE FORUM, I FIND THAT I HAVE SEVERAL NAIL PROBLEMS. THEY SPLIT, THERE ARE WAVES OR GROOVES SINCE WEARING THE JEL AND OTHER NAILS FROM THE NAIL SHOPS. THEY ARE SO VERY WEAK, I CANNOT EVEN SCRATCH MY BACK OR APPLY ANY PRESSURE WITHOUT DISCOMFORT. THE TIPS ARE UNEVEN IN THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE NORMAL LINE WHERE THE WHITE BEGINS, IT IS VERY UNEVEN, AND I DO PLAN TO SEE MY DOCTOR. LET US PRAY. SAVANNAH
