Subject: Bruises under fingernails
Message: My girlfriend removed 10 false nails from each of her fingernails approximately 3 months ago. They had the usual signs of "nail scarring" - that is, they were damaged from the false nails.
However, before they were able to grow in well, every one of the 10 nails shows signs of black and blue bruising underneath the front edge of the nail, behind the white tips. (Please indicate if you need a better description.)
We've noticed that the bruised portion is a precursor to that portion of the nail becoming a "white" part, so now most of her nails have white "tips" that extend midway into the entire nail itself. (Again, please indicate if you need a better description.)
Finally, her toenails do not have any indications of this problem...
We intend for her to see a doctor but wanted some base knowledge first. What could be some causes? Is this a symptom of a disease? What will happen next? Thanks for any input.

Message: How did she remove the nails? That can tell you right there a lot of the time. Did she pull them and pry them to get them off or did she soak them off in Acetone polish remover???
Pulling and prying can cause the bruising, the proper way is to soak them off and have a manicure afterward to help the nails get back in shape.

Message: Yes I had the fake nails glued to my natural nails and took them off though I did soak them one nail was very hard to remove to I used a sharp instrument and bruised my nailbed so now I have a area underneath my real nail that is a "pocket" and I will have to wait I was told probally 2 months for it to grow out. Well needless to say I will never do that again and I have found an all american non asian nail salon where they sculpt the nail and do not use tips or glue!!!! and it is so much better for your nails well nothing on your nails would be best.

Message: Judy,
even though they do not use tips or glue, they are still using a "lethal" mixture of acrylic powder and monomer to form that ball of glue that turns into hardened acrylic. it's no better for your nails than gluing plastic on with crazy glue, and worse in the long run because we have to re-do it every 2 weeks. you sound just like i did for 5 years. it's amazing how many excuses we can come up with, in our heads, for destroying our nails.

Message: Judy,
i just hate to see and hear about people going through the same ordeal i did for way too long. i found a reason to try everything and the only thing all the "enhancements" had in common was that they detroyed my own nails.
