Subject: REMOVAL OF ARTIFICIAL NAILS INSTRUCTIONS
Message: OK, Time to step in and give a lesson on removing artificial nails. Too many people are tearing up their own nails to remove acrylic and such... ON TOP of bad application of products and abuse of the nail files/drills.
First this though--
Your results once they are removed properly depends on several things:
If your nails are MUSHY--you've most likely been exposed to the chemical MMA. You need to file a formal complaint with your State Board of Cosmetology. Read this page for more info: http://tenx10nails.tripod.com/index_files/page0002.htm
Sensitivity--this occurs for more than one reason. Over filing the nails can cause this if you've only had them on a short time (a month or 2) that's more likely the culprit. The other is, how long have you had them on? Enhancements "desensitizes" the nail bed to an extent--like a football helmet protects your head. When you take them off, you feel more bumps against your nails than you used to feel because they haven't been able to feel them in a while.
Thin nails... you nails will be a little bit thinner than they used to be. Now, over filing will make them WAY thinner than they are supposed to be.
OK, ON TO THE INSTRUCTIONS:
Gather these things:
Cotton balls, or something disposable like tissue
ACETONE--whether it's polish remover containing it or straight stuff from the beauty supply, or Home improvement store (it's all the same if it says "Pure Acetone".
Aluminum Foil--regular home stuff.
Dish or hand towel
Heating pad-- low setting!
1.soak each cotton ball with the acetone and place it on the whole nail.
2. Cover the cotton and the nail with a piece of foil--make a ball around the finger.
3. Wrap hand in a towel.
4. Cover or wrap hand with the heating pad (low setting!)
5. Wait 15 minutes and remove the foil wiping away loose product with the cotton ball.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until all product is removed. DO NOT pull, rip or pry the product away from your nails at ANY time.
Have fun with your nails... just don't abuse them!

Message: I just removed my nails and I've been using Sally Hansen's "Thicken Up" Nail strengthening thickener. I see a big difference in thickness in just one week. You can't even tell I had artificial nails on for over 2 years.

Message: Criss,
During the research and development stages of our Growth Formula, I used the insight from the Mayo clinic for a vast amount of my information. They said that definitively, paint on hardeners only build strength as the layers of polish is applied, in other words, the only strength is in the polish, not transferring any to the nails at all...
The Growth Formula will strengthen by the process of cell stimulation, which increases growth rate and strengthens the nails. It is not something that is painted on it is rubbed in and does some work....So okay waste your money on things that only advertise benefits and when they polish is removed so is that imagined strength...

Message: You said it Barbara! The nail is only as thick as the coating on top. Before fakes, I used to spend a lot of time getting 5-6 coats on - the next day bump something and half would chip off.
Regarding the Acetone - the last soak off I had sent me to the Doc with 10 inflamed - if I'd been a year younger I'd have cried - cuticles. Then try to wear medical gloves to care for sick hubby - brother! what a time that was!
That of course begs the question: WHAT WaS I ThInKiNg when I put them BACK ON again! Ugh!
CAROL: Thank you for posting the proper way to remove them - that is important. I didn't dare this last time - I already had raw cuticles from the chemicals. It took about 12 years for it to start - and 5-6 years to progress to from that point once it started.

Message: This is great info! Ok, now for my dumb question. I currently don't have tips, but I do get my nails done. The girl at the nail salon uses the filler product over my whole nail and then, I get the French manicure. So, if I follow this procedure, is that all I need to do? It's so odd that I stumbled(sp?) upon this site because I was literally getting ready to go to the nail salon to have it (whatever it is) taken off!
Thanks!

Message: I was just considering having my newly aquired nails filled for the second time. NOW thinking of removing the acrylic. What would happen if i just allowed my nails to grow and gradually let the acrylic grow out and keep it filed as it grows?

Message: Melody,
You could do that, but beware of snagging the nails and ripping them off and further damaging your natural nails. If you soak the fakes off please use some vitamin e oil afterwards to provide some measure of releif for your cuticles and nails. The acetone dehydrates everything....Moisture is vital at this point....You need to trim the nails down and be cautions not to leave any rough edges that could snag.
Even though the acetone is harsh, it is the only way to "melt" the bonding agents and remove the nails safely.

9/19/2005 18:02:03 | RE: Removal of nails/solar nail/press-on nails
Message: HELP! I have only had my nails for going on 4 days and I hate them. I ask for the solar nails because they are supposed to be thin and more natural looking they used powder and liquid (pink and white) to do a french but then I needed polish over that. I thought that the solar nails were supposed to be natural looking and maintenance free. Apparently I got acrylic even though I asked for solar. Since it has only been 4 days will the removal procedure be fairly easy? Do you remove the solar nails the same way. Are they gel as opposed to powder? Lastly, has any one used the press on products just for say a special event rather than long term use and do they work? I have heard you can wear them for up to a week. Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts and input!
