Subject: nail detaching from bed
Message: I noticed that both of the nails on my big toes starting detaching from the nail bed several months ago. I have recently noticed that this is starting to happen to several of my fingernails. There is no discoloration. Any idea about what might be going on?

Message: I forgot the name of this medical condition, from what I remember it will gradually get worse and more and more nail will get seperated from the nailbed. The danger is that something gets caught in the free edge (as it gets bigger and bigger) and rips the lot off. Even when trimming the free edge the result will be a shorter and shorter nail until finally the nailbed is completely detached from any nail at all. If that happens, there is no choice but to remove the whole remaining nail as anything caught in this nail is likely to turn this nail upright, causing immense pain and damaging the root matrix. My personal choice would be to have all affected nails removed, the nailbeds thoroughly disinfected to allow the nail to re-grow in a proper manner. Anything less would allow the condition to spread to unaffected nails. Sorry for the bad news.

Message: Word of advice from a professional nail tech... you need to see the Dermatologist about this ASAP before any permanent damage occurs. BUT BUT BUT BUT if there is ANY way around removing the nails do that FIRST!
Why? Removing the nail is not always the right answer! Dr's like the extra money. I know a guy that was treated for fungus with shots, then they wanted to remove his nails completely... he got a second opinion and it was only psoriasis of the nails! He was grateful for the 2nd opinion because it saved him THOUSANDS of dollars and it was treatable with a prescription cortisone ointment that costs him $10 a year.
There are a lot of disorders that cause the nails to lift from the bed like that... starting on the feet can be athletes foot(a yeast infection) and it spreads through contact. Thus getting on the fingers. You can catch it anywhere too.
But also, the yeast can be an internal problem too affecting the nails like that. so you need to go to the Dr.
