Message: HI! I'm new to this forum and I thought I would say hi and offer a little help.
Ok, HI!
Um, help about the ridges--
I don't know what kind of ridges you all have in your nails, so I'm gonna just guess.
Monica and Velma:
I'm assuming you may have the ridges in your nails that go from the nail bed to the tip, that are very faint in some people and more pronounced in others.
Those ridges were likely already in your nails before you even got acrylics, its just that NOW you have begun to noticed them.
What I've noticed while looking at other peoples hands is that the more pronounced those ridges are, the thicker the person's nails are. These are the kind of ridges I have in my own nails. The way I fix it is to just file down the ridges with a medium grain nail file and then buff them. I do the same thing for my toes. IF you have manicures and pedicures, this is what they do to your nails too, IF they know what they are doing.
BUT some people have warped or wavy fingernails and they mistakenly call the warps ridges. THAT, I don't know how to to disguise.
Anon: I'm going to guess that the ridges in your nails may not be as simple as the ones above. But are treated the same way. I don't know how old you are, but I do know that some people get ridges in thier nails as they get older and thier nails get a little thicker, or a lot thinner. In my personal opinion, I don't think the advair caused this, but alas, I an no doctor or pharmacist, I just know a few people who use advair, including a seven year old boy. If you can't do what's mentioned above to the other two posters, go to a professional, manicurist who is liscensed by the state you are in, and get a manicure (and a pedicure if the mood suits you). Tell the tech what the problem is and I'm sure they should be able to help you.

Message: Hey I got horizontal ridges in my nails from biting them a lot when i was younger - i still bite em and they also peel - I only have this in 2 finger nails, I used to have it in 3 but then that 1 got better - do u think acrylics might help 2 disguise it and let it grow - the nails r real thin too so i dunno how itll react to the chemicals.......

Message: Hi girls and boys,
I'm sorry to say that I think you are all incorrect. No manicurist or beautician will have any idea of the cause of ridges in nails because no one really knows why. Manicurists make nails look pretty, there not GP's or Naturopaths.
I'm 32 and have always had nice nails (not thick) up until about one year ago when I developed horizontal ridges (the only way they develop, not vertical).
The most common cause is STRESS or perhaps a deficiency or a problem with your digistive system. These are more of a possibility than anything else.
The other possible cause would be to check for any fungal infections by giving a sample of your nail which is taken off to a lab and to wait for any fungus to grow. It can take up to 8 weeks. Although a fungus is usually when your nails turn yellow and start on your big toe.
Good luck, and don't get stressed !!!

Message: I have had horizontal waves in my thumbnails since I was a child. The only time they were flat was when I was pregnant. Then they went back to the wavey thumbnails when I wasn't pregnant. I am now 61 and the waves are pretty pronounced but just in my thumbs. Has anyone thought that maybe it is related to hormones? I did not take hormone replacements. My nails are very strong and would keep growing long if I didn't cut them. I don't think it has anything to do with nail strength. It has always been a puzzle to me.

Message: I'm 33 years old and all my life I have bitten my nails but I like to get my nails done now. My nails look nice when there done but the discrepancy is that my real nails grow up to the sky and not down. I can't stand it. I hide my hands alot and they are thin. Please, please, tell me what can I do to make them grow faster, longer, stronger, and down. I will try anything. Thank You.
