Subject: help~ my toenail came off and looks horrible

Message:
about a month ago, i wore shoes that were way too small and my big toenail got black and blue. it has since then started to come off so last night i helped it along and now i only have a minimum amount of nail at the cuticle. there is a protective covering over the toe but i have this redish brown gross skin stuff covering the nail plate. i know that i should keep it clean with alcohol and put neosporin on it but i was wondering if there is anything else that i can do... also i was wondering how soon big toenails grow... please help... thanks!

Kristin,
I think that you should go see a doctor about your toenail. I had a toenail come off before and i went to the doctor and he gave me medicine to make it grow back and stuff to keep it clean. But I really don't remember how soon it grew back. Good luck!

MY BIG TOENAIL RECENTLY SPLIT IN A COUPLE OF SPOTS AND LIFTED, THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE NAIL BED, SO I AM HOPING IT WON'T FALL OFF, JUST GROW OUT AND I CAN TRIM IT. I HAVE BEEN PUTTING NEOSPORIN ON IT AND WASHING IT WITH ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP, IT DOESN'T HURT ANYMORE, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW...HELP!!

RE: help~ d looks horrible

Message:
as long as it's healing and not red, swollen or yucky it's probably fine. you don't say how it came off. did you injure it? when the nail comes off whether by injury or something else the nerves around it needs time to heal too. just don't wear tight or too small shoes.

i would think at this point, nothing. seems as though the worst is over. if the nail is not growing out then you probably damaged the tissue under the toe and probably will never have a "regular" growing nail. ask the doctor, he will know. write down questions for him if you need to.

Can I use nail polish remover on my dead toenail?

Message:
Hello! I recently dropped something heavy on my big toenail and and then a few days later I dropped a 5 gallon bucket of ice on it (I guess I was moving a little too fast at work that day) and now the nail is barely there and things are getting pretty bad. My first question is, what kind of doctor should I see? A physician? A pediatrist? Secondly, my old pedicure is looking pretty bad, can I use nail polish remover on this "dead" nail so I can reapply something else (and maybe have a shot at hiding this monstrosity a little better! ha!) And Thirdly, if a nail doesn't grow back..... is there anybody that makes like.... fake nails or something for this type of thing?? AHH! I'm so glad I found this messsage board!!!!!

Kate,
a crushing injury is usually more damaging than just a nail being ripped off-especially twice! a podiatrist is who you need to see. you will need to take the polish off for him to have something to see. remover isn't going to hurt it, but you really don't need to polish it again until you find out its fate. if they do decide to remove the nail, make sure they don't put acid on the matrix underneath the nail. if they kill that part then you definitely will not grow another nail. if you don't grow another nail, then there really isn't anything to attach acrylic or a nail tip to, other than bare skin. super gluing on a plastic tip is just asking for it to be ripped off. you need to find out, from a doctor, whether the nail can be saved or not first.
