Hi! So glad to find a sensible nail forum!
I've been wearing artificials for 1.5 years (with
reasonable breathers in between) and
decided to stop to grow out my natural nails --
I'm a nail biter and have struggled with this for
years.
Problem: I've developed tiny little streaks that
begin about halfway up the nail-bed (towards
the tip). They look like little blood streaks, I
think. Also -- this is the bigger problem -- I'm
developing terribly painful dark-colored
bruises about halfway up (they look deeper
than the streaks). The nails literally ache and
are very sensitive to the touch.
The odd thing is that I can't remember
bruising them in any way, and this is really
puzzling me, since it's not in two consecutive
nails the way a bruise might be from a car
door or something -- the dark bruise spots are
on both thumbnails, one pinkie and one ring
finger.
Could it be from some kind of cumulative
damage from taking off the artificial full-cover
nails? Can a nail-bed bruise from this -- or
did I somehow pull half the nail up during
removal without feeling any pain while I did it?
And what will happen when the bruises grow
out to the tip?
Any advice/pain relief tips very much
appreciated!

ps.: I've been using NailTek intensive re-grow
formula, lots of vitamin E, Burt's Bees cuticle
balm, lotion in order to rehydrate as much as
possible. Is there any wild chance this
problem is a result of a circulation-stimulating
cream rubbed into the nail?

Nail Tek Xtra is better for growing out post acrylics... just a thought there...
On the bruising thing... how did you remove the nails? Did you soak them off or rip them off? Ripping artificial nails off can bruise them like that.
Sensitivity is common... two reasons why... 1. someone filed your nails too much. 2. when worn for exended periods of time your nail bed becomes desensitized to normal activities, so it seems you feel more than you did before. ie. cold nail polish going on your nail.
Both are normal reactions--though filing should be kept minimal on the nail plate. Someone using a nail drill too much can do it--not the drill itself, the person using it.

Hi,
I was just doing a google search for any information on reactions to Nail Tek. I too, took off my gel nails (real nails with gel coating) just a few months ago and began using Nail Tek to strengthen them. I had been experiencing some pain in my fingers and thought it was because they were extraordiarily thin. While typing last week, one of my nails began leaking. Sorry if this grosses you out but you should know what could happen. What those 'bruises' are are actually blisters on the skin under the nail and the pain is from that as well as the pressure against the nail. I went to the doctors after realizing that one of the blisters had burst. The others had to be drained by a dermatologist. Since I have stopped using Nail Tek as well as taking steriods and antibiotics (topically and orally) the pain has gone away. The bruising seems to get worse however, that is just the blisters healing. I fear that I will loose most of my nails until they heal completely. My advice: STOP USING NAIL TEK and get to a doctor. It is a reaction to the formaldehyde in the polish. Good luck.

Hi i have been using rimmel 2 week treatment to make my nails grow....it worked! really well but after the nail polish is appilied the nails are super sensitive and aching i thought itt was when the polish dries or somthin so i didnt mind much cause my nails were longer than ever in my life before .
My mother and sisters used it and today i noticed we all have a bruise under our left thumb nail on inside.
So i wanted to check out what was up.
i guess its what happens when we put nail grow stuff on it, it grows to fast and damages, mabey jus a nail hardner would be better. slower but less pain!

I too have blisters under my nails and very painful nails but I don't get my nails done anywhere. I don't wear artificial nails at all. I don't even wear nail polish. I was searching to try and find what could be causing this terrible pain in my nails. My dermatologists said it is not a fungus, to take some nail strengthening meds. I am but they are still hurting. I work with Chemicals. Develope film. I also wear laytex gloves often when handling the chemicals. So I am not sure if I have become allergic to the gloves or the chemicals that I work with. At least if it is the gloves I can try the plastic ones. But if it ends up being the chemicals I am not sure whats going to happen. Found that artificial nail info page while searching for my problem. Hope it helped. Now to get back to searching for my problems.

I just think we should all stick to all natural. Your nails are not meant to have glue, layers and layers of acrylic on them and drilling of all things done to them. Some of those nail place seem nasty too. I have worn acrylic nails off and on for years and my nails are permanantly damaged from them. Removal is painful, (no matter how you do it) if you bump them that hurts too! They have to be unsanitary, don't you think! The things we do to make us feel beautiful! Yes they do look pretty! I am not sure if they are worth it! If anyone knows about any great products to help your natural nails grow, etc. Thanks!

All you girls that are having problems with blisters please take Cheryls suggestion and check out this Nail Growth Formula. I have NEVER found anything like it and my nails grow like you can't believe. Naturally this wasn't from the start but after a few months. I have a feeling you'll have to grow the full nail out and start with healthy nails before you'll see any improvement. I suggest you give it a try though.
