Subject: fake nail disaster
Message: For the first time ever I stuck fake nails on. At first they kept coming off all the time and I was told to use a file to roughen the surface of my nails. Although I didn't like the idea I did it and it really helped. After a week I decided to take them off. It was not easy and when I came to my left thumb the nail wouldn't come off. I soaked my hand in warm water for 1/4 hour and tried again to pull it off. This time I could feel movement and I kept pulling although it pained. After a while and some tears I had the nail off and couldn't believe my eyes: All I had left on my thumb was a very thin skinlike layer of my own nail, the rest was gone! When I touch it it behaves like skin and hurts, it's not like nail at all, just like a bit of tough skin. Whenever something touches it, it hurts, when I put pressure on my thumb, it hurts and it looks abysmal! Whatever happened? Will my nail ever come back? I tried to file it into shape and it started ripping off and bleeding, leaving the area very sore and red. Do I have that flesh eating bug?

Message: Unless you stuck that nail on with Elmer's glue, water won't get it off! You need pure Acetone.. available at your local beauty supply or at Home Depot type stores... they are all the same if it says pure acetone.
What happened is you ripped the majority of your nail plate off! That is why you soak acrylics off in acetone.
Now that you've drawn blood, I'd see a Dr about it. So they can make sure there is no secondary infection setting in. Doubtful that it's the flesh eating kind though!
You should never "rip" artificial nails off, always soak them off. Everytime you pull them off like that, you pull layers of your nail plate with them.
