Subject: Cuticles
Message: Is anybody elses cuticles suffering like mine are during the winter? Since they're not supple and basically dry I find myself picking at them more which, I know, is not a good thing. Does anybody have a sure-fire way to combat this problem?

Message: Sure fire? Nope... I just use NGF more often. I put it on heavy before bed and that does help some though I must admit I don't have to deal with the extreme winters you eskimos in the east do.
Although... I was about ready to break out my parka and mukluks (sp?) last week when out over night dropped to 30 freezing degrees!

Message: Hol:
I have also noticed that my cuticles are more dry now that winter has set in. (In NJ today, it's about 40 and very windy!) I've been noticing some hang-nails here & there on my fingertips.
As I said before, I joined this forum after I'd already found a product to get my acryllic-abused nails back to health. Therefore, I have not yet tried NGF. I use "healthy hoof", "obey your body", and "solar oil". I know these are a lot of products, but I keep them in various places all around my house so if I ever see my cuticles looking shabby, I just grab whatever is close at hand. I am not sure which one of these products works the best for me and I'm not sure that my nails would suffer if I just used one and not the other two. I believe the "healthy hoof" is the most like NGF because it is a rich, heavy cream high in lanolin. I like it because it seems to act like a wax and almost "waterproof" my nails.
But I think that the two oils are good in a different way. They are slick and smooth and I think because of that consistency, they penetrate the cuticle differently than the "healthy hoof."
Since I've been using the "solar oil" I found that my cuticles are not quite as bad. I think it's about $10 at CVS. I bought it about a month or so ago because a friend recommended it. A little seems to go a long way and the smell is just beautiful (if you like almonds.)
Why not give it a shot. If you don't like it, CVS has a very liberal return policy. What have you got to lose?!
PS I saw my sister in law yesterday. I haven't seen her since the spring when I first removed my acrylics. She was just AMAZED at how long, strong & beautiful my nails were! Trust me, this is a HUGE compliment for me because I never, ever had nice nails. That is why I was so addicted to the acrylics. Now that I have my nail care routine down, I will never go back to them -- EVER!

Message: Where in Jersey are you, Mary? I'm in northwest Jersey. I have a feeling it has something to do with the bad winters up here.

Message: Mary,
The NGF stimulates cell activity and has a cumulative affect! The lanoline is a natural moisture barrier....(sheeps fat! lol)
And I love just the one item that takes care of it all.... I am wwwwwaaaaayyyyyyyyy tttooooooo busy to worry with an assortment of anything. Lots of the gals here use the solar oil as an additional enhancement for the cuticles and swear by its benefits. I love my lanolin lotions, along with my NGF! I'm so wintery dry right now!

Message: Hol, I live in NJ about 1/2 hour south of Trenton. It must be the dry cold weather that's affecting our cuticles. They don't get at all dry in the summer months. Good luck with it!

Message: You know I was thinking, Mary, just because the weather is nice, as it's been lately, doesn't mean you're cuticles will be hunky dory. We do use the fireplace at night and had the temperature in the house up to 80 last night. This creates a dry atmosphere for your skin and cuticles. I think hubby thinks it's funny getting the temperature that high but not so when you're cooking! Naturally I opened the window and he shut it. Boy, did that lead to an argument!

Message: Hol,
You're right about the weather. It's been unseasonably warm lately in NJ. But still, when we do have those cold snaps, the dry heat is very drying to the skin. I can tell because my face gets really dry in the winter too. It all happens at the same time -- my face, my hands & my cuticles.
