Subject: ridges on my thumbnails
Message: Hey everyone. Kinda wierd being a guy posting to a nailcare forum but I had a quick question I was hoping someone could answer. I have lines going horizontally across my thumbnails, both of them. if I look close enough, I can see very faint ones on my index fingernails as well. I know everyone (well, maybe not EVERYone) has ridges going vertically up your nail. these are horizontal. They don't look like they are on the surface and I can't feel them if I rub a different fingernail over them.
I checked a couple other sites out but those were all outdated and the only thing anyone could tell me was "you could have a serious medical issue" ... thanks for being so damn vague! hah. so, if anyone has any insight into this, it would be fantastic.
Oh, I don't have medical insurance, so, that's why I haven't been to a doctor yet.

Message: Hi Tim!
I have ridges also, especially noticible on my thumb nails, but like you I also have them on the other nails. Mine run both horizontally and vertically. In my case it's from years of acrylic abuse as well as picking at my nails my entire life. I am convinced I was a picker/biter in the womb as well :)
Have you had a drastic diet change? New medication (even over the counter ones can cause this).
It's true, though, that the ridges can be a symptom of a serious condition. I just recently learned that your body's reaction to cancer can cause the ridges as well. So, while you don't have insurance I would still strongly suggest you find a free clinic or some other way to get to a doctor just to make sure.
