Subject: bite thumbnail off
Message: my little sister (13yrs old) was biting her nails and bit off her thumbnail i'm kinda freaked i've lost a piece of my own due to acrylics when i was about her age but not all the way off like hers it just happened last night so it's still very tender it is pink and at the base where that little cresent is is a bubble i can't tell if there is any nail at all left whats going on is my lil honey going to get it back? and we covered it with gause and a band-aide but what else should i do?is a doctor nessasary?

there's not much a doctor can do unless it becomes infected. i would also put a thin layer of neosporin on it underneath the band-aid. if she gnawed into the matrix of the nail, the part of the nail that actually does the growing, then she may have damaged the nails ability to grow again. only time will tell and her leaving it alone. our mouths are full of germs and she could infect her thumb, herself, by biting it again. just remind her about all the doors, doorknobs, bathroom faucets, stall doors and many other germ ridden stuff we touch everyday and then stick all that right in our mouths everytime we gnaw. it's disgusting.
