Subject: A question about cancer -
Message: I know this isn't a medical site but I also know so many of you are great resources!
I may be getting worked up too soon, but my doctor had told me I could call in for the results of the biopsy on a mole I had on my back. So I called in, the nurse didn't give me the results - said the doctor had to 'sign off' on it. She called me back and he wants me to come in and talk to him. So, needless to say I'm a bit concerned.
I've done a lot of research on the web about this but can't find a whole lot of information. Does anyone have any experience with cancerous moles? Are they considered a form of skin cancer? What information does anyone have?
Thanks -
Moi

Message: don't forget ruth, there's basil cell carcinoma, the most common form of cancerous moles. many, many people have them removed everyday. any cancerous mole caught early is curable. some doctors would just rather give you your removal options in person. don't jump the gun and take it one step at a time.

Message: I'm no authority on cancer but just take a bit of wisdom from me. Last year I had a mammogram (actually for quite a while I was on the 6 month plan) although this time it did require more tests. An ultrasound to be exact. I was a basket case but didn't let on. Everybody I talked to said not to worry because alot of times they turn out fine but easier said than done. I had the test done the day before I went on vacation and the radiologist was nice enough to read it before I left. It turned out to be nothing so, Ruth, don't always think the worst! Everything they do is JUST precautionary.

Message: Thank you for the information, Cheryl! Would you believe that in all the research I did 'basil cell' never popped up?? I had forgotten all about it too!
Hol, thank heavens your test turned out alright - and thank you for the words of encouragement, they are muchly appreciated.
See, on my mothers side my great-great grandmother died of stomach cancer, her daughter, my great grandmother died of breast cancer, her daughter, my grand aunt died (in her 50's) of breast cancer and my grandmother, their sister and daughter died of colon and lung cancer. So, I do tend to be a bit touchy when it comes to this type of thing.
I'm just going to try to take it easy this weekend and not get worked up - thank you again ladies!

Message: I can of course offer NO insight....(nothing unusual there!) But I can say that there are indeed plenty of instances that patients have received news of something suspicious(*&^%$#@!~ and in the end, fortunately, it proved to be either a false positive or an out and out negative. Doctors now days are so afraid of being sued that they will *test you to death* so don't worry about any disease!
Please Ruth, keep us posted, and I will ask a special prayer for you today. You know we will all keep you in our thoughts and prayers and hope that the news is an all clear.

Message: Ruth, just because a doctor wants to talk to you don't think the worst. It might be something just as simple as "we have to keep an eye on it." He's just looking out or you. Please keep us posted and I'll surely say an extra prayer for my friend. Supposedily basil cell (what Cheryl mentioned) is very common, at least I think, so just look at EVERYTHING with a positive attitude. I know easier said than done or you'll go crazy if you do anything else. Isn't growing old fun????????

Message: Well, it's invasive malignant melanoma and I will be getting a chest x-ray and an appt with a surgeon to remove a large area around the mole. That's all I know for now. Hopefully ..... well ... hopefully all will work out fine.

Message: ruth,
my neighbor, across the street, in her 30's, had one removed from her leg 5 years ago and is fine. except for the missing tissue, doesn't have any after effects at all. she's just vigilant about watching suspicious moles and covering up now. something we should all do, but don't until we get a scare. don't let it frighten you. use that emotion to gather as much information as you can about removal and treatment and take back some of the power it has stolen.
