Subject: New here & have some questions
Message: Hello: I stumbled upon this forum a few days ago & have been poking around for advice ever since. I'm so happy to have found it because I've recently made the commitment go "au natural" with my nails. I've had acrylics off and on for about 20 years. In May, my nail girl took leave to have a baby. Since I counldn't find anyone who did as good a job as she did, I decided to FINALLY work on getting my natural nails in shape.
I honestly didn't think I could ever do it. My 10-year old daughter was a big help, though. At career day in school, as cosmetologist came in and talked to all the kids about hair, nails, etc. She told them (girls especially) about the dangers of nail enhancements. My daughter begged me to remove them. She's one smart cookie!
I almost didn't make it, though, because they looked horrible and I really didn't think I'd ever be able to grow them long. The turning point was after about one month when I succumbed to the kiosk at the mall with the "Natural Nail" products. I finally let one of the employees there show me their products. I was AMAZED. The stuff I bought is called Obey Your Body and the kit contains cuticle oil, hand lotion, a nail file, and a 3 way buffer. The products are made with Dead Sea Minerals and it's imported from Israel.
I used it religiously and I also bought a little tub of another cutile cream called "Healthy Hoof". I keep that in my kitchen so it's always near at hand. I rub it into my cuticles about 2 to 3 times throughout the day.
Has anyone else tried these products?
Now my nails are strong and flexible. I rarely have any peeling which used to be a big issue for me. Even my friends and family have commented on how pretty my nails are. And trust me, I NEVER had nice nails before using these products.
My one question is this....When I do wear nail polish, I noticed that after I remove it with nail polish remover and then do my normal manicure with the Obey Your Body kit, my cuticles are dry and have grown over my nail a bit. I try to just push them back because I know removing them is just asking for trouble. But when they grow like that, what else can I do? When I just push them back, then they are all bunched up at the bottom of my nail. I sometimes take my very sturdy thumb nail and just sort of use it as an exacto knife -- meaning I use my nail to sort of "trim back" my cuticle. Is this ok? I never bleed and I never rip the skin. I just kind of trim away the dry excess cuticle that comes as a result of using nail polish for a week or so.
I hope you can understand this. Sorry for not having a better way of describing it.
I appreciate all your help! Thanks!

Message: Hi Mary,
Where do you work?
You are correct.....NEVER cut the cuticle unless you have absolutley NO OPTIONS.
This can lead to potential infections, and your cuticles are there for a reason. You might want to use the Natural Nails Growth Formula to keep your cuticles conditioned. You can just push your cuticles back with your fingertip while rubbing in the formula.
ANY time you use any polish removers or polishes you are drying out your nails and cuticles. Use a non-acetone based remover and never use it more than twice monthly. The nails and cuticles become dehydrated quite easily. So make certain to use something like a lanoline based hand cream if you do not use the Natural Nails Growth Formula on you nails and cuticles.

Message: Thank you for the quick reply, Barbara. I had no idea that nail polish remover should be used no more than 2X monthly. Wow! Now that my nails are long & strong, I've been really enjoying jazzing them up with color! I'll have to take it easy.
The Healthy Hoof stuff contains lanolin (5th ingredient) and also contains beeswax, stearic acid, lavendar oil, rosemary oil and many other ingredients. When it runs out, I will try the Natural Nails Growth Formula.
I look forward to reading and posting here often. There is so much good information!
Thanks again!

Message: Mary,
What you should do is just *touch up* your paint job between removals. The Mayo Clinic advises that anything that dries on the nails dries out the nails. So polishes can be dehydrating too. I use Honey Bee Gardens water based polishes. A lot of the girls here do. Some of us don't because they don't have the longevity of the others such as OPI but the Honey Bee Gardens polishes are so gentle that longevity is not at issue for me personally..... I actually enjoy the fact that I can basically peel it off when I am ready for a manicure or just want to change colors.
Please do jump in here with us. We have a very delightful batch of *crazies*, oops! I mean LADIES!@#$%^&*+=-_987654321`~ So welcome aboard Mary.

Message: Welcome, Mary! You confirmed my suspicions that lanolin is the key. With the NGF lanolin is the first ingredient so with the NGF I would think you'd get more. I use non-acetone nailpolish remover when I get the urge to color my nails. Actually it doesn't seem to be a priority anymore because my nails don't need the protection of a few coats of nailpolish for strength any longer since my nails are so strong since using NGF. They're so hydrated I do have a problem getting polish to adhere longer than 4 days but that's a small price to pay compared to what I went through when I had weak nails. I've been using the product since May and wouldn't have it any other way. I notice my nails actually grow faster than before and I'm constantly cutting them (apx. 3-4 weeks). Now could you ever say that? When I do break a nail (and there's no way to get by without) I really don't stress over it any longer because I know it will grow back quite fast.

Message: Hi Barbara, I work from home, actually. I live in NJ and I've been at my current job for almost 10 years. The company is an internet technology company and I was hired on a part time basis 10 years ago. It's nice to have the flexibility to work from home and with young children, it's really been a blessing.
Hol, I also have finally gotten my nails strong enough that they don't break easily. So if I want them shorter, I usually file them down (always in only one direction.) Occassionally, I do have a nail that begins to peel. When that happens, I usually file that nail down past the peeling and then file the other to match that nail's length. (I am obsessive!)
Today I am heading outside to pressure wash our deck. It's going to be a huge, time consuming job and I hope that my nails will survive it!
Oh, and a very good friend of mine is going in for surgery right about now. Please say a prayer for her!
Thanks!

Message: Hi Mary, I'm new around here, too. Taking off your acrylics was a big step. I'm glad you did it. I also bought the Obey kit at the mall. I gotta tell ya, the buffer from Obey is taking layers off your nails. It's not a good thing. The buffing kit on this site is much gentler on the nail. Obey puts a nice shine on the nail but the damage under the shine isn't worth it. I'm just a NGF user. I wasn't paid to put down Obey. It's just my own thoughts.

Message: A west coast babe, hey? I like it ;)
One thing you'll find about me, I say what I mean and mean what I say... unless I'm trying to not hurt someones feelings in which case I say what I mean but I say it in such a way as to cause the least amount of upset... unless I'm in a pissy mood then I just say what I mean and mean what I say. But at least you can understand me because though I am a southern gal (southern california) I do not have that heavy southern accent that Barb has. When Barb gets ranting it's nearly impossible to understand her so just nod a lot and smile.... she'll never know the difference ;)
(love you Barb) :)
