Subject: Did I damage matrix?
Message: Hi, I bite my nails and the ends split. I have a habit of peeling layers of my nail off, and sometimes I peel as far down as my cuticle. this creates Hole-like things when my nail grows out. I peeled the hole , taking off layers of my nail down toward where the nail grows out. now the bottom half of my nail is extremely thin, with only a couple of layers left. The top half is still normal. Will the bottom half grow back? Did I damage the matrix? I'm scared. I'm never biting my nails again.

Message: Karen you should get a dr to check your nails for you. It doesn't sound good at all and you could end up with a bad infection on top of the obvious physical damage. I can't say whether your nails will repair, it might be a wait and see thing. I can say that my own nails are repairing after treating them with respect and 5 months of nurturing with NGF. I didn't chew mine but I did do damage with chemicals through acrylics so very similar really. :-(
I've still got one nail that appears to produce a "crack" from under the matrix and it is present the full length of the nail, then splits thenail if I let it get too long or it catches on something. I don't think my nail will ever heal and I don't even know the original damage that actually caused it.
Do yourself a favour and get your doctor to check your nails first. Then treat them like babies and love them and take care of them. Good luck girl. :-)
