Subject: HELP!! Another Acrylic Nail Allergy (I think)
Message: Ladies,
I am in need of some help/advise from a reaction to an ordinary "Acrylic" fill I had done a few weeks back. I have been getting my nails done for approx 6 years, and never had a problem. Normally, I go to the same salon but this particular time I went to a brand new salon that just happened to be closer to my home. The first visit was fine, however, the second fill I had done made my cuticles red, swollen, and the itching was almost unbearable. After a few days it seemed to be getting better and I waited another three weeks before the next fill. I went back to this same salon and once again, the reaction was the same. Red, swollen, itchy cuticles. Some even with small blistering. It's now 2 weeks later and the skin around my nails are extremely dry, cracking, peeling, and still sore. I am afraid to do another re-fill again since my cuticles are in such bad condition. What to do from here? Do I have them removed for good? Any advise/recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Message: Sheliah,
You need to have the acrylics removed for good. It sounds like you have developed an allergic reaction to acrylic products. Your problem will keep getting worse if you don't stop getting re-fills. A product that can cause allergic reactions is a chemical called methyl methacrylate, or MMA. It has been banned for use in salons, but a lot of discount nail shops and a lot of nicer salons are still using it because it's so cheap. If you decide to let your nail tech remove them, do not let them pop or pry them off. It will make your own nails worse if you let them do those painful procedures. They must be soaked off.

Message: sheliah,
you can go for years and then suddenly start having bad reactions. it could be happening for many reasons too numerous to go into. you go back for another fill and it's going to hurt like heck. wait for the soreness and cracking to get better and soak them off. once you start having reactions to the acrylic they just get a little worse everytime. moisturize your cuticles with cuticle oil right now, get them in better shape, soak them off and start over with your own nails. it can be done with some patience and time. i, and many ladies here, are testament to recovering our own nails after acrylics. go to this sites home page and read about the Nail Growth Formula. money and time better spent.

Message: My sis in law came over Sat and I noticed after 3 years of wearing, she had taken off her acrylics. I asked her why and she showed me her cuticles. Red, swollen, bleeding and obviously sore. She went to the dr. and the dr. told her to take the acrylics off and never put them back on. He has seen more and more patients coming in like that. He told her to keep them clean and moisturized so I gave her a little sampling of NGF.
:::fingers crossed that she uses it:::

Message: Thank you all for the great advise. My first step is to take off these acrylics (for good) and order the Natural Growth Formula and start treating my nails and cuticles the right way.
**sidenote - Is Acetone the product I use remove the acrylic? I would rather remove them myself than visit the salon.
Thanks again...........

Message: Great idea, Sheliah! You just have to give your nails a little time to heal and you'll be amazed at how lovely your nails will look using just NGF.

Message: Sheliah,
In response to your question, pure acetone is the product that removes acrylics. You can buy it in beauty supply stores, drugstores, Wal-Mart and in some supermarkets.

Message: sheliah,
when you get the acetone and are ready to soak them off, we can guide you through the process and make it more comfortable for you. you won't regret the decision 3 months from now, trust me. they will grow and become healthy again. they just need some time and TLC.

Message: Hi Sheliah - I'm glad you decided to remove them! Definitely nip this in the bud. This same thing happened to me with a thumbnail. I ignored it and kept putting things like hydrocortisone on to kill that awful itch. Sure, that went away after a couple weeks, but what then settled in later were both a fungal and bacterial infection. A dermatologist had me using 2 ointments. After a new nail grew back, idiot me tried having an acrylic put on. Same thing happened in no time. It took a good 3 years for this nail to look normal again, eventhough it still has some small ridges.

Message: Sheliah, years ago I had acrylic nails put on and for a couple of years things were fine. Then one day, once the fill had been completed, my nails started to heat up on both sides, and the manicurist couldn't even buff the fill down because it was so hot to the touch, and she should have been on my side !!!
It took months for my nails to go back to normal, but I didn't have NGF then, and it's the only product that has worked on my nails. Some people can have acrylics forever, I'm just not one of them either.
