Subject: Your Opinions, please
Message: If there's ONE thing this group is good at, it's giving your opinions. I need yours!
I went to the Dr. yesterday and I learned I need to have a mole biopsied. It's a very strange mole, strange shape, flat, and multi colored. I hadn't seen it myself until yesterday when the doctor took a picture of it and showed it to me. All I can say is .... Hmmmmmmmmmm.
So, what do you all know about the % rate of these things being cancerous, how treatable are they and if it IS cancer, what do they do??
Thanks ladies!

Message: ruth,
basil cell carcinoma seems to be the most common form of skin cancer. so many people have them. my neighbor has one on his forehead "dug out" every few years or so. he can be a little hard headed about wearing sunscreen! another friend of mine had a melanoma removed from her leg a few years back and is doing fine now, but is adamant about staying out of the sun. either way, catching them early is the key. i would not worry. go have it biopsied, removed and be done with it. it will all just make you and your doctor more aware of moles on you, and that's never a bad thing.

Message: My hubby has a thing for getting moles removed. Its like his new hobby! He made me get one taken off the side of my nose years ago and then made me have Dr. Clark remove some "freckles" that grew together and had them biopsied! I wish he would stick to cutting, freezing, slicing himself and not get me involved.... I just hate that. I know if a mole or whatever changes shape, size and/or color it is best to have it checked.... And knowing is definately better than worry! Even if the results of the tests are not what you hoped for, at least you know what you are dealing with. Those that were checked out on me proved to be nothing to worry over. Just a mole and some run together freckels!

Message: The thing that worries me about that is the shape. Malignant moles are frequently oddly shaped. By all means, get it biopsied, and the sooner the better. If it is benign, it's a bonus, but if it is malignant, the sooner you get it removed the better the prognosis.

Message: Moi - for most "barnacles" or moles they remove, most doctors or dermatologists want a biopsy. It's just good form, plus insurance might not cover lesion removal without a biopsy. And, really, would you want it any other way? You want to know one way or the other.
