 Subject: "the quick"Message: no such thing as a stupid question from you hol. the quick is what you gnaw into after you've bitten away the white, if it's there, and most of the pink of the nail. this coming from a 35+ year nail biter. it is very painful afterwards. sometimes bleeds and is painful to even open a door knob. a terrible, disfiguring habit. it makes women want to buy into the whole acrylic cover-up, but the habit is still there when they come off and the nails are in worse shape. it's a wonder i have anything there at all. thank god for NGF. |

I probably haven't done it since I was about 20 but the urge is ALWAYS there and sometimes I do bite my nails but I'm glad to say also not down to the "quick" anymore. I remember though it hurts like the dickens. I guess I would equate it to "biting my nails down to the nubs." Maybe that's why I was slow in catching on. |
| cheryl IP: 206.159.161.156 7/05/2006 20:33:25 | RE: "the quick" Message: my mom would always say,"you bite them down to the quick". probably where i first heard it. she tells me i started biting when i was four. i stopped for the first time in my early 20's, then again in my late 30's, then the destructive acrylic route, now stopped for good. it's a tough, tough habit to break. more than a few times, i bit a few almost completely away. talk about pain and ugly to boot. they always manage to grow out and forgive me. |

I couldn't stand the feel of that glue on the underside of my nails after a fill, so I'd nibble it off. What a recipe for disaster as I couldn't even see the damage I was doing prying the nails up from the beds. |

And often I even tried to bite the quick.. lol but it just resulted in a bloody finger nail...! Glad to know i'm not the only one thats done this. |
