Subject: Benefits of Blueberries
Message: Just recently I have introduced myself to the blueberry and usually eat it on my morning cereal so I can understand why you, Barbara, have blueberries growing on your spread. For anyone interested blueberries are one of the best sources of antioxidants, they can slow the aging process and reduce cell damage that can lead to cancer. All this sounds good to me! This getting old is the pits and I can use all the help I can get.

Message: The benefits are numerous, the flavor is divine! I wish they would bloom and produce fruit year round! But that makes them that much more flavorful....
You know Hol, you sound very much like myself....(with regards to the post you placed under the subject apology)
I really do wish I had Moi's tact. I attend Theocratic Ministry School and I am much improved with regards to my temperament, but it is obvious I have a long way to go....... The thing that concerns me most about people like that is the fact that they seem to be allowed to shout from the roof top, their lies and stick it in your face. And if anyone objects, with REAL proof of just the opposite, we are judged as being unkind, and I was told not long ago by the nailgeek, I was using scare tactics to sell my products!
How do you, in a nice way, say to people you're not trying to scare people to death, you just want to share the truth! Does NO BODY WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT ANYTHING ANYMORE?

Message: Barb,
I picture Jack Nicholson shouting "THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH" LOL!!!
Anywho... it all goes back to my theory about low self esteem and the need to be accepted. If you're doing what they do, wearing what they wear, eating what they eat and going where they go, you're validing them and thereby boosting their low self esteem. At the first sign of dissent, they start to come unravelled and feel the need to reaffirm themselves no matter how, even if it's through lies or misinformation!
Anyone who agrees with me is welcome to reply. All others... you don't know what you're talking about! HA!! ;)

Message: I've gotten EXTREMELY cynical with just what has come up in the news lately. Things being approved even though there is specific data "behind the scenes" that products are not good for us. I can come up with many examples but what comes to mind is HRT, cigarettes and Vioxx. Just recently medical marijuana has been in the news (especially in NJ) and I can get on my high horse about that one too although I am for this one. Since there is no $s in it for the drug companies they are trying to shoot it down. All I'm hearing about are the negative aspects of the "drug" in an effort for them to try and bolster their cause. Give me a break! Whatever relieves me of my pain if and when I'm sick (god forbid) I sure hope medical marijuana is legal by then! You may disagree with me on this so then we'll just agree to disagree. Ok I'm off my pedestal now (lol).

Message: Well that one day of rain was pleasing to say the least, but alas.......The poor blueberries are all withering on the bushes. We are about 8+ inches shy of our usual rainfall for this time of year. If this continues then we wont have any pecans this fall either...... Man that stinks!
Hol, I am with Cheryl here. Her comment pretty well covers anything I would say with regards to being ill and looking for relief..... So jump on that ole soap box any time you want to rant, or just vent!

Message: I'm so sorry about those blueberries, Barbara. Seems they couldn't take the lack of rain. Sure hope the pecans aren't doomed too. Barb, you seem to be the expert with those blueberries so maybe you can give me some advice when it comes to blueberries. That's my thing now. Since plants aren't my forte can I have just one blueberry bush in my backyard? Does it need alot of room? Will it be enough where I won't be blueberried up to my eyeballs? I'd like to get at least one plant but as I said my thumb is more brown than green. I had 2 strawberry plants and I noticed they weren't there anymore. I'm sure when hubby was weeding he inadvertently pulled them out. Guess I'll have to start all over again (sigh)! Now those strawberries are a treat. Even my dog is known as the strawberry dog but thank god doesn't bother the strawberries unless I give them to her. Getting ready for the heat. Baking alot before the heat hits. Today it's chocolate chip cookies but that should prove a challange because we're starting to go up heat-wise today. It's so nice now when 2 people in my household are already out at work and the other one is sleeping and it's just little ole me and my coffee! Soon I'll have to get the other one off to work so it'll be just me and my pooch! Oh the time alone. I can't contain myself!!!!!!

Message: Good morning Hol,
You can indeed have just one blueberry bush, but two would be best. That will give you another chance for the poor thing to survive! lol
Give them plenty of room. We have, from the center of each plant, about 6 feet in all directions to the next plant. But these bushes are almost 65 years old. So they are very spread out. They will get really big. If just left to grow "wild", they will continue to expand into to next yard. You need to keep them cut back at the root system, ground level as they begin to spread in their old age! There is not "one central trunk" or stalk or what ever you call it.... There are multiple stems that just pop up and grow to high heaven. But no biggie because you can just prune them back about every 5 years or so. Not a lot of effort for a fabulous pay off. So once your plants catch on, they will product nicely. Two plants that are mature, will give you a nice little portion of berries in the early summer without overdoing it at all. In fact, if you really enjoy the berries that much you might consider 4 bushes across the back of you house, close to your kitchen door... You just step out, pick your berries, drop them in your cereal bowl and enjoy!

Message: Thanks, Barbara, for the blueberry lesson. Have to keep my eyes peeled for blueberry bushes at the nursery. Have to add them to my wish list that hubby has that also entails lilac bushes. Sounds like the blueberry bushes really need room. Each summer I have to have zucchini plants. Nothing like zucchini bread but they sure do take alot of room too.

Message: you two inspired me so much with your blueberry talk, that i just ordered 3 plants from a family owned blueberry farm in Missouri. they don't ship until sept. so i'm assuming that's when you plant them. i'm in the middle of grape growing country up here, so they should grow wonderfully. there's nothing i can't grow in this wonderful, black dirt up here! that georgia and mississippi red clay used to make me crazy when it came to growing anything, living down there. my mom says i have my grandmother's green thumb. i love trying the "impossible" up here!
