Subject: Extreme Pain under Thumbnail
Message: I have been getting acrylics for months now. I recently hit the thumbnailpretty hard while cooking, but that was weeks ago. Suddenly this week I have been experiencing pain, in the bed of my thumbnail, I wake up in the middle of the night with a deep throbing pain. No discoloration or deformity as of yet. I am having the fake nails removed and I will not be putting them back on. EVER!!!!!!!! What could possibly be casuing the pain. thanks in advance.

Message: Hi Kim!
It's so hard to say for sure what might have happened, but did you notice if the acrylic separated from the nail anywhere, or possibly the nail itself pulled away from the bed when you injured it? If so it's possible you've gotten an infection. Keep an eye on it for swelling, redness or pus and be sure to see a doctor if removing the acrylics doesn't help.
I took mine off because the fills were becoming so painful. Removing them is never fun, especially if you're already experiencing pain but it's the right thing to do. I wish I knew more about your specific situation. It might even be a good idea to see a dr. before removing them.
Good luck, Kim, and please let us know how it goes.

Message: kim,
hopefully all you did was bruise your own nail bed. worst case is, your nail, under the acrylics, has seperated from the nail bed. if the throbbing pain continues, you may need to see a doctor. you will be able to tell a lot more after they are removed. however you remove them, DO NOT let them "pop" them off. they must be soaked off. if you have anymore concerns, please let us know. so many of us here have been through this whole horrible acrylic nightmare.

Message: I had the acrylics removed and the pain has subsided for now. It is still very tender. There was a tad bit of swelling in the nail bed and around the cutilces. But nothing to make me think I have an infection yet. No discoloration or anything. Now I am nursing my nails back to health. So maybe I was blessed this time, I guess this is my warning about acrylics. I will simply go and get a manicure and that's it. I wonder if I can do the manicure myself? Well, anyway thank you guys, findng this site has really been helpful and your posts were insightful as well. Thanks again.

Message: kim,
glad to hear your nail is on the mend AND that you are now acrylic free. i had acrylics at one time too. they were all uniform and stayed painted forever, but what was happening to my own nails was just horrible, underneath. you could do a manicure yourself, but i would go have one done as a "present", to yourself, for becoming acrylic-free! i don't know if you've thought about how you are going to keep your nails moisturized and healthy now that they are yours again, but the Nail Growth Formula on this site is something worth reading about. i am just a customer, as are most of us here, but it has been a life saver for more than a few of us. the jar will last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, so it's very economical and you get healthy, flexible nails to boot. just something to consider.

Message: Kim - I had a thumbnail that simply couldn't tolerate acrylics. Even when I was still having them done, I had to leave that one "free". I would get a throbbing pain and swelling after a fill along the inside end of the actual tissue, but there was no infection present, just some lifting of that nail. Maybe the trama of hitting your nail has made it proned to an intolerance to the product. Now that you removed it and it feels better seems to be a good indicator that you were adding insult to injury as they say! As Cheryl said, this might be a good time to try the NGF. Nails grow faster in Summer and you might see quick results.

Message: Thanks guys. I am going to purchase the nail growth formula this week. However, since I had the nails soaked off, the pain is returning every now and again. This deep throbing pain, then it goes away again, but never completely. I am taking ibuprofen for the swelling and pain. I think I am going to make an appointment this week with my Dr. Just to have it checked out, to make sure no infection is present.

Message: Kim,
I think that is a wise decision to see a Dr. I mean I know we are all just too, too smart on this forum, but a second opinion is definitely the wise course......... {{{{{{{{{{LOL}}}}}}}}}}
