Subject: Gardening, anyone?

Message:
Hi Ladies! Sorry I have been so absent lately. This is such a busy time of year when you still have school-aged kids. Plus, I've been doing seasonal cleanup in general. This past week, gardening began. I couldn't help but think back to last year because the gardening is what really pushed my acrylics to toxic levels! So, eventhough I don't have acrylics and have strong NGF nails this year, I'm trying to be a good girl and remember the gloves. I'm one of those who feels it isn't really gardening without feeling the dirt! So, I have resorted to surgical gloves and like them much better than bulky gardening gloves. Thought I'd pass that idea on.

Any other gardeners out there? I don't do veggies, but I should pick up a couple tomato plants for fun this year. They'd have to be in my fenced area or the deer and bunnies will feast. Right now I'm doing my annuals and have built up a pot collection I plunk in my garden. I had pea gravel poured there last year and I love this pot method. In my back yard, I have a bunch of shepherd hooks and shopped exclusively for my hummingbirds. So far, I've attracted a little yellow canary.

So, how does your garden grow?

After sooooo long with no rain, I mowed the yard yesterday, or the dirt! Finally a tad of rain hit our dust bowl last evening. Not much, but hopefully it will help the blueberries, it certainly can't hurt anything.... I just get heart sick when they dry up and wither on the bushes.... Several years ago they were all as big around as my thumb and so sweet....OUTSTANDING! But here of for the last 2 summers they have been drying up due to the lack of rainfall. Wish we could afford an irrigation system for the full five acres.....

Hi Lynnie!!
When we landscaped it about 4 years ago, we made an English type garden right outside the family room. My hubby and brother built a patio and the garden begins right there. I have a true white rose bush that is huge, a miniature Rainbows End rose bush, a Josephs Coat rose bush, one called a Candy Striper and one I can't recall. I have several Kafir Lilys, Lily of Nile, Bearded Iris' and Day Lilys. I have a huge Lavender bush and 2 crazy big Rosemary bushes. We just recently planted some Sage, Thyme, Fennel, Parsley, Lemon Grass and a couple of tomato bushes. My miniature orange tree has oranges this year and I have 2 artichokes coming up! Oh, we planted a couple chile plants and bell peppers too. I find it so relaxing to water the plants and watch them grow and produce. :)

Over the weekend we got sooooo much rain here in NJ. I even had to take the plants in especially the hanging flowering baskets. When too much rain hits the flowers that's their doom. Have to pick off the dead flowers AGAIN. Temperature has dropped substantially but at least the humidity is gone. Grass too wet to mow but hubby told me to tell the "prince" to mow it when he gets kicked out of bed at 11am. At least to try.

Girls! (Actually, my ex grew "herbs" back in the 70's. Thus, why he is my ex.) I'm planting annuals in my pots! This is my 5th year in this house and I think I finally bought all deer resistant plants for the front. Otherwise, I will wake up to just stems some mornings. I have a back patio and a fenced area. Back there, I have shepherd hooks and hanging plants and a couple planters. Oh, Deb, my hummingbirds are showing up around 3 p.m. to feast on my fuscia. I think of you and your Mom when they do.

Moi - your garden sounds lovely! I'm impressed by the herbs and artichokes. Wow, I don't know how to grow artichokes but I know how to stuff them. lol

Barbara - your dirt sounds nice too. hehehe How much of that 5 acres do you mow? Yikes!

Hol - I'm in NY so you, me and Cheryl are *enjoying* the same weather. What a pattern already. The weekends have been lousy! Here it has killed any desire for me to attend outdoor events like festivals and such so far. Tomorrow we have a graduation party at a park I'm dreading. Oh boy, 60 degrees and damp!

after living here for a year, i decided that hostas were the best route for me. down south, it's just too hot for them. they appear in spring, here, like magic, and disappear and become covered in snow in fall and winter. they are the "lazy gardeners" perinnial!! i grow orchids and fruit trees inside my house all year, so i guess i still have a little of the "southern gardener" left in me! here, close to lake erie, we've been very lucky with the weather so far. i think we're far enough west, that we stayed away from the "east coast" weather, and the lake sucked the moisture out of any rain systems. i cuss that lake in the winter, but it sure does make up for it in the summer! lynnie, i've never lived in an area that has soooo many festivals-every weekend! we have quite a few here in little fredonia. i too, have a party to attend outside today and it's only 65 degrees and very windy, but bright sunshine. ahhh, western NY weather-wait 10 minutes and it will change!

cheryl - I used to have hostas at my last house. I'd transplanted them from our family's cottage. They are so hardy and multiply like mad, yet if you buy them they cost a fortune. I like the variegated ones best. Hey, I had an outdoor party to attend today too - sooooo windy, but at least it was Sunny! We got spoiled last Summer with a nice June. This is actually more the norm, huh? I love the festivals - IF the weather is right. Boyfriend and I are in for the evening as I'm not even tempted to go to our Jazz festival tonight.
