Subject: So how do you clean your nails?

Message:
At the risk of offending by asking a gross question, how do you clean dirt from beneath your nails when you don't have access to water? I scrape mine with the edge of some tweezers, is that bad? I have used those silver file things with the hooked shape on the ends but they are a bit too rounded. What are your thoughts on how this cleaning should be done?

You might be able to use a nail brush to remove that dirt. I don't really think it will take care of all of it though. Just be very careful when you run that file, or whatever, under the nails. You don't want to break the skin and give possible rise to infections and bacterial transfers.

helen, hereis my suggestion if your able to purchase baby wipes they come in purse size theyre moist and if you have to use the file under your nails at least the baby wipes will lend some cushion for protecting your nail. hope is helps

Cher that is so funny becuase that is exactly what I do! I have a fingernail brush at home but if I am out somewhere that I cannot use one I will pull one out and use it with my file on my clippers.

That is so interesting. It just never would have occurred to me that "dry cleaning" nails isn't good for them. I've always got wipes in my bag, I will give it a try. Thanks.

You shouldn't use a metal to clean under your nails because it is so strong and it actually scrapes layers off of your nails causing them to become thin and brittle... I use a nail brush and scrub them... I also run my thumb nails under my other ones to get the dirt out... It works well!

Ally you may have something there. Perhaps by using metal scraper cleaners under the nail it does thin the nail down. Maybe thats why my nails always broke in the past. A few weeks ago, about week 2 or 3 of using NGF, I noticed two nails had clear sections on the short tips. I put the scraper straight through one of the clear sections and had to cut the nail to the very edge of the nailbed. I'm a bit gentler now.

Wow! I am taking these tips to heart because I'm an over-zealous cleaner and I know I have caused many of those low breaks from cleaning. Lately I've been a little rubber cuticle-pusher-backer to clean underneath. This is way better than the metal file method, but I love the baby wipes suggestion. Thanks!!!!
