Subject: NAIL TECH: Burning Nails

Message:
i'm not exactly sure why i'm responding, because, typically, you, and i when i say "you", i mean all the nail techs that have come here in the past 4+ years trying to justify leaving our nails in shatters, just "hit and run" with your replies, and it's not worth the effort and time, on our part here, to reply to you. i am SO happy that you are a caring, kind, non-destructive tech, but you are in severe denial if you believe ALL techs are like you. i searched for 3 LONG years and did not find even one that could not or would not destroy my nail bed. i was left with bacterial, fungal and allergic reactions in every case. all the while, being told, it was normal. the sanitary practices were non-existent and horrifying once i was informed and knew what to look and ask for. a large majority of us, here, have had painful, drawn out experiences with techs and acrylics, all the while taking our money, every fill, and not blinking an eye when we express concerns about the green, black crud growing, the sores that pop up after a fill, or the unbearable swelling, itching and redness everytime. paranoid? wanting to be treated as a human being and have our questions answered and not blown off like we're idiots? i wouldn't exactly call us paranoid. more like, not putting up with the B.S. anymore. by the way, i'm a customer of barabara's, as are a lot of ladies here. barbara has never worn any kind of enhancement on her nails. she has developed this product over the years into something that actually does what it says. imagine that, a product that you spend your hard earned money on that actually works. if you want to know what's in the product then buy some. it's printed right on the label.

Cheryl, I'm also with you about what you said. I'm staying out of those 'nail salons'. I was turned off completely after I heard on my local news on TV that a woman died after receiving a pedicure. Along with that pedicure, she got a staph infection that turned deadly. Also, online, I heard another horror story. A lady got acrylics put on, and after that, she claimed the tech pierced all of her nail beds. She developed a fungal infection and didn't have any nails at all for a year! The NGF sold on this site sounds like a much better bargain than having to deal with the pain, torture, and health concerns of the fake nails.

thank you ladies. it's good to know my message does not go unheard. i'm sure there are some techs out here that are very gentle, non-drillers, and the like, but the fact remains, that, dehydraters, acid primers and roughing of the nail beds, still must go on, along with the acrylic fills. our nails are not meant to be that hard. to lose an entire nail when the acrylic is hit is just not acceptable in my book. our nail beds are flexible, acrylic is just that-hard, un-bendable acrylic. so many nail salons pop up everyday with employees that speak little or no english, have very few correct sanitary answers to our questions, and rely on our dollars to survive. how many salons do you get up and walk out of before you quit looking? i found horrible sanitary conditions, using the same files and drills over and over and sanding my fingers to the point of bleeding. i went for 3 years asking all the right questions and did not find even one. of course they are going to sell a product in order to get you to come back every two weeks! unfortunately, we have way too few manicurists, and way too many acrylic nail techs. the money is faster, more of it, and they have you every few weeks. what kills me is the teenagers getting them. there should be parental consent, under, say, 16 years old and should have to provide information on what the dangers are. the only problem is, i'm sure quite a few mother's of these girls also have them too. ok, i'm done with my raging. it's been a while since i've done it, i guess!

Where I live, I see a lot of teenagers getting and wearing acrylics all the time. I'm a teenager myself (I won't be an adult until November of this year), but I've never had acrylics and I don't plan to wear them. I was also notified about the dangers of those fake things on Barbara's "Youth and acrylics" post. In my area, there are also a lot of Asian discount nail shops with illegal immigrants. My mom said that she'd never let me get acrylics, so I'm staying "all-natural" and taking her advice.

Thanks for the compliment, Cheryl! I'm pretty mature for my age, probably because I just graduated from high school a year early. I'm glad to be here contributing to others' posts, especially to those people who really need advice.

It's so nice to have you participating in this forum, Jessica, and get a young person's perspective on this issue. I associate acrylic nail use and tanning in the same group when it comes to our young people. For the people who have been through this all our advice goes in one ear and out the other. Youngins' think they're invincible at such a young age when it comes to many things. So did I when I was younger MANY moons ago. Not until I've started getting these age/sun spots did I realize what damage I did when I was younger. Thank god I really never got into the acrylic thing (only for a few years and did not suffer any of the damage spoken here). It was just never for me. My patience started wearing thin sitting in that darn chair when getting my nails done. What I do remember quite vividly though is when I removed the nails my nail beds were so sore from the constant sanding when I got fills. Just that left a bad taste in my mouth and just due to that I'll NEVER do that one again. Now don't get me started on the immigrant issue. Anyway, that's a subject in itself!

I developed an allergy to acrylic. It wasn't until I removed the nails (under Cheryl's guidance) that I realized the full extent of the damage done to my nails. All but 2 of my nails had lifted at the edges to about halfway up the nail.

Lorraine,
How are your nails doing now, since you were wise enough to remove the acrylics? I do hope you are recovering nicely.
