Subject: Nail fungus?
Message: I've noticed that the nails on both of my big toes are turning yellow. There are some white specks, as well. I'm freaking out because I have always been meticulous about my feet. I finally stopped having pedicures at the salon because of my fear of catching something. Since I was very young, I have ALWAYS worn nail polish on my toes, so it is possible that this has been going on for some time. Please help!!! Is it fungus? What can I do?

Message: Laura,
are the nails "crumbly"? it could just be they are very stained due to them being polished all the time. the white specks sound like bruises that we all get on our nails and toenails. the only way to tell if it truly is a fungus is to go to a dermatologist and have them do a scraping and test it. it's the only way. you can't tell just by looking at them. how are your other toenails?

Message: No, they're not crumbling. I sure hope they don't get that way. Would the yellowing be due to nail polish since it is just the big toenails? Thanks!

Message: staining could affect just the big toes, enough that you notice it. just a bigger nail surface for the yellowing to cover. my big toes, especially after wearing red, will yellow very easily. you might want to try and buff them with a 4 sided buffer to see if that gets rid of the yellow. the only way to truly get rid of the yellowing, if that's what it is, is to go without polish for a few weeks, or use at least a pastel color.

Message: Could you use a base coat or clear first to stop the pigment penetrating too deep?

Message: Read the ingredients of your nail color. If there is yellow #5, that is usually the culprit. You will have to just stop with the polishes for a while, let the problem clear up, if that is the problem.... If it is not, then you will have at least eliminated it as a suspect, at no cost. If the yellowing broadens across the nails after ceasing the polishing, then it is pretty certain it is a fungal or bacterial issue. At this point you will need to see a dermatologist to determine the precise cause. Then do whatever the DR says.
But first, use the least expensive method. Just stop polishing. Hope this helps. Keep us posted!
