Subject: Summer Tips!

Message:
Hi Ladies - I remember doing a Winter Tips thread. Now I realize there are challenges to every season when it comes to hands and nails. Please share yours. Here are mine:

GARDEN GLOVES - I'm screaming this one at myself because there's still part of me that feels like I'm not really gardening unless there is dirt under my nails. But not wearing gloves is the sure way to ruin your nails in just one hour!

Stain prevention from self-tanners - I'm officially OUT of the sun this year unless wearing SPF and I've started using self-tanners. Wear surgical gloves whenever applying as this WILL stain your nails a nice orangey yellow. When done with your body, take off one glove and squirt some lotion or whatever on a cosmetic sponge. This gives you more control for your hands. Then use your other glove to hold the sponge to do your other hand. And, speaking of tanning and nails ..... if any of you still use tanning beds, hang your nails out the edge of the bed. The bulbs can also yellow your nails.

Cleaning - place a soft toothbrush or fingernail brush in reach. Nails seem to get dirtier in Summer when you are more active outdoors. But, if you are dealing with nails that are still sort of pried up from acryils or those low breaks on the sides, cleaning underneath with a pointy file will only continue those processes. I'm a clean nail freak, but I know that if I get one of those low breaks - HOW I clean them. Another nono - using one nail to clean under the others. Fess up - we all do this!

Lastly, if you use SPF, don't forget your hands! They are one of those telltale age clues, for sure.

Happy Spring, all!

Whatever the season I always use those plastic gloves (thin ones) you can find at a beauty supply when I do cleaning. Sure helps protecting the nails. My therapy is cooking/baking anyday as opposed to cleaning so as you can see I don't clean as often as I should. I'm into the spray self-tanner. I think it works better than the creams. Just make sure you're not on a nice rug when you spray because then the rug gets a spritz each time you tan and it builds up. It's hell to clean the carpets then. I use to do the natural suntan thing but I don't have the patience anymore. Getting old anyway you think about wrinkles and cancer. I haven't started the sunless tanning thing yet because I don't even want to think about the upkeep. The toes still aren't painted.

Hol - what spray tanner are you liking? I have one by St. Tropez that is a mist, not an aerosol. It's so messy, I'll probably save that one for just legs and do it outdoors! It does give a more brown color. I'm still relying more on the graduals for a subtle glow for now. I agree - it's time to get out of the sun so we don't look like Samsonite.

Sheltie! I know what you mean about gloves. I'd rather go without, just like I love walking barefoot. It's one of those "tactile" things, but I do like those surgical ones better than the old Playtex ones.

Lynnie - I use Neutrogena Micromist Tanning Sunless Spray. Got a good write-up in Allure magazine. Remember, I'm NO authority of this sunless tanning stuff because I've been doing for LESS than 5 yrs. I find the mist doesn't streak at all compared to the cream. Walmart seems to have the best price at something like $7. Don't quote me though. Just bought a whole bunch of them to get me through the summer. You can't find this stuff towards the end of the summer and will have to settle for something that doesn't strike your fancy. I found a 4 oz. sample of Neutrogena Pre-Sunless Scrub attached to each micromist so it seemed to be a good deal. Last summer I ran out of the Neutrogena and tried to find more and couldn't so I wound up using Loreal stuff (mist) and it was awful. Never seemed to dry. We have a house at the shore and usually go there for a week in August and the transition from sunless tanner to real tan seems to go over well. Just as long as I get to my vacation with the sunless tanner I'm fine.

Thanks for the tip on the Neutrogena Mist, Hol. You are a more seasoned pro than I, as this is my first year relying only on self-tanners. Last night I tried my St. Tropez again and I think I got it right this time. When I run out, I'll consider the Neutrogena. I'm trying to decide whether this self-tanning routine is a timesaver or if I've become even higher maintenance! lol

Actually I think it's higher maintenance, Lynnie. I do like the benefits of a tan but I'm really running out of patience and wonder how much longer I'll do this.

come on girls. you know our legs look much better in shorts, dresses etc. when we have a tan, once you apply self tanner for a couple of days you should only have to apply it every other day or so, i use loreal deep tanner, i always get the ones that say darker or deeper. i think its worth the time for the results.

I use the Banana Boat Deep Tan, because I can usually get this at the dollar store. I also like it because it doesn't make me organge and I don't feel like an Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate factory! LOL! I do put some lotion on my knees and around my ankles prior to applying the sunless cream, that way I don't get the dirty knee/ankle look.....YUK I hate that! But my fat legs look a whole lot better tanned than they do stark white! LOL!
