Message: have the dr. cut out the part that's growing into the skin. they numb it, and you don't feel a thing when they cut it out. i had one 18 years ago on my big toe, and it was pure relief when they cut that section out. it wasn't a big deal.

Message: Don't be afraid. I worked for a podiatrist and also had an ingrown toenail. If just an edge of the nail is ingrowing, like Cheryl said, they numb you and just remove that section. They kill it at the root in that area and it doesn't grow back. Your nail looks fine. I do suggest that you have this done in Summer, when you can wear sandals a week while it heals. Also, you want to get a grip on that possible infection now. You need to soak that foot a couple times per day. There's a soak you can buy in a drugstore called Domoboro that is good. Then use an antibacterial ointment like Neosporin.
Believe me, you will wonder why you waited so long to do this. No more trying to dig that nail out when trimming, no more hurting shoes. See, underneat the surface what is happing is that nail is curving like a spiral and cutting into your toe. There's really no fixing this one at home.
Best wishes.
