Subject: Fingers in Door - Cuticle?
Message: I recently smashed my two fingers in a door and it looks as if I am losing both fingernails. I am concerned about one finger that looks like I will lose the cuticle? Should I be concerned? Will my fingernail grow back. The back of my fingernail (where the white part, crescent it) is popping out of skin and it appears that the cuticle is attached to nail for the most part. The only thing keeping my fingernail attached is a small part towards the end of my finger. Shall I go ahead and remove fingernail or leave it on as long as I can? I'm more concerned about the cuticle.

Message: jonathan,
if it's not too painful, i would go ahead and remove the injured nail. i lost cuticle's on two of my nails quite a few years ago and it took a while but they did come back. you just have to be extremely vigilant about keeping that area clean afterwards. they are the barrier that keeps germs out. if you decide to take the nail off, soak the finger in hydrogen peroxide and keep a bandaid and neosporin on it until the inflamation is better. take the bandaid off at night and let it "air" out. eventually, rub some vitamin e or cuticle oil into the cuticles and keep them hydrated and i believe you will see a healthy cuticle again, but it might take a few months. any redness or pus then get to a doctor. good luck.

Message: it can. it did in my case, but, it took about a year. keeping it soft and hydrated after the swelling has gone down will help. any pus or redness then get to a doctor. an infection is definitely not something you want to treat at home, ok?
