Subject: Hang nail problem
Message: Hello, I have always had hangnail problems, probably from biting nails for years. Well the past month I got 2 bad hangnails on my left hand, the thumb and the middle finger. Now the nails are separating from the finger and thumb, the nails has some yellow in them. Both nails are definitely coming off and there does not appear to be news ones coming in. Also on my middle toe of my left foot same problem, hang nail now the nails is coming off. What the heck is going on? Is this one sign of diabetes? No family history of diabetes so I am not sure. Nail fungus?

Message: Will,
possibly a fungus, maybe just a bacterial infection. because your toe has it makes me think it was passed on to your fingernails. a fungus is tough to get rid of without a doctors help. they can be very recurring and you can reinfect easily. there is a condition called oncholysis, which is loosening or seperation of a nail due to injury or trauma, such as a hangnail, or excessive biting. when you do have a hang nail you always need to clip it off with cuticle nippers or fingernail clippers. never, never, rip it down. that opens the door for infection of the cuticle and there is then nothing to stop germs from getting down in there. our cuticles are there for a reason. you need to see a dermatologist and go from there.

Message: Will - I agree with Cheryl that you should see a dermatologist before it continues to spread. I had a similar experience with a thumb nail. It got aggravated by an acrylic filling session and itched afterwards. The cuticle became inflammed. Eventhough the initial inflammation went away, I was left with both a bacterial and fungal infection later when that nail separated from the bed as yours are doing now. You need prescription strength topical meds, sometimes even an oral antibiotic, to kill this one off! Good luck!
