Subject: Dead Fingernail - HELP!
Message: Hi,
I had acrylics on for years and while on vacation (and three days after a new fill), I snagged one of my nails and it broke off. I did what any woman would do in that crisis, I glued the nail back on!
Well, my nail felt funny so, I removed the acrylic nail. To my amazement, the nail that had not broken was now dead almost all the way to the cuticle. What do I do?? Do I cut all the dead away, or leave it?? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Message: I think I am experiencing the same problem. I used to get acrylic and gels put on but when i got them off for the last time 6 months ago one of my nails almost all the way up to the cuticle (only on the one side and to a slant to the other side) seems "dead" or at least whitish like it is not touching the skin underneath it. It never healed and I finally got sick of it and just cut all the dead away...lets see what happens.

Message: only one? it happened to all 10 of mine last year. it's pretty sickening to remove the acrylic for the last time and realize none of your own nails are attached anymore. by some miracle, they "forgave" me and with the help of the growth formula from this site, i have healthy nails again. when i initially saw the damage, after i removed them, it left me with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Message: I am having a problem with my nails. Started on my index finger, the white on my nail is continuing from the tip into the nail bed, it's spreading further and further into the bed and not evenly. its very brittle as well. it continues to grow but turns white and brittle. I thought it was fungus but it's not yellow it's white. its starting to happen to my other nails as well.

Message: The same thing happened to my nails when I removed the acrylic from my nails. I was totally unaware of what was happening under these fake nails. I was horrified and embarrassed by the look of them. Thankfully, they grew back and look absolutely normal again. I started to use the nail growth formula last December. It took about 3 months before you could not see the evidence of the damage.

Message: Sara Beth,
It sounds like you need to seal in the moisture. Do you use antibacterial soaps, and wash your hands a lot? Or are your hands in water a lot, as in the nursing field?
If the nails are brittle that indicates lack of moisture.

Message: I'd be thinking that if your nail appears "white" like it usually does once it has grown past the end of your finger then it has detached from the nail bed. If there is infection or fungus you would know it. When my acrylics came off I cried so much because I thought I was stuck with deformed looking nails. I knew they were detached because I could push the edge of the file too far under the nail. It made me feel sick to think about the damage I'd caused. It took a really long time but I did feed the nails with the NGF and eventually the damaged nails reattached.I'd say it took maybe 5 months of good care to regrow. I also tried hard not to use a file to clean. I'd try and run the water under the nail to clean and often used the hair dryer to dry. Then I'd smother them in NGF again and my hands in hand cream.
