Subject: weeping nails

Message:
Hi I have had acrylics for a few consecutive months now as far as I can remember. Maybe november or December 05. Only just this week Ive noticed under my real nail the skin is weeping and cut open on a few fingers. The worst is one of my indexes and a strand of hair got underneath and cut under there so I have this big ugly sore on the corner of my nail. I made the mistake of puting on a band aid and water got in there... now the finger is like a zombie's finger with moisture cuts and dryness. What do I do??? I'm scared the acrylic removal chemicals will burn my fingers if I ask to take off the false nails but I don't want them to get worse.

Thanks.

Enix,
what has happened to your nails is just abuse. your nail bed has been drilled and sanded down so much that there is nothing of it left to hold on to the acrylic. open sores are not right. no one should have them. you have infected fingers that are just going to become worse. you are right, the removal isn't going to feel good, but what could happen if you keep them on is far, far worse. your fingers need to heal. it also sounds like you could be allergic to the acrylic mixture too. doesn't it hurt when you go in for fills? you can take them off at home. that way you are in control of how they come off. i wouldn't trust anyone to remove them correctly after the mess they've left you with. they are only going to get worse if you do nothing, or you continue with them. i see worsening infection, doctor visits and antibiotics if you don't do something now.

Enix,
don't be stressed out. you can make them better, but it's going to take some time, patience and care. you are allergic to the acrylic mixture that is spread to make the fills everytime. between the drilling, sanding, acid primer, etc. your body, your skin on your fingertips, has an allergic reaction to the acrylic fills. it will never go away and only get worse over time. eventually your nail bed will become detached from your finger due to all this. it's a shame they continue to do this to you over and over. it's your decision to put a stop to it and you can start by soaking them off. it's not going to feel very good on irritated skin, but they need to come off. if you want to wait a couple of weeks to see if the skin calms down then soak them off that would be fine. do not get them re-filled. you will just be starting over at square one with the redness and allergic reaction. to soak them off you need a small glass bowl and a larger plastic bowl to set the glass one into. you will need some acetone polish remover to soak them in. pour a small amount into the glass bowl and then set that bowl over into the plastic bowl that you have filled with warm water. acetone has a cold feeling and warming it from the bottom up makes this more comfortable. do one finger at a time. it takes a while. they will start to "melt" away and you can continue soaking or you can try and buff what's left of the acrylic mess away-very gently! this will work but it takes some time. i'm afraid if you go back to where you are getting them filled they will just "pop" them off and that will leave you with painful, peeling nail beds that are in worse shape then they are now. you will need to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize everyday, multiple times a day and especially at night. remove these "things" before they destroy your nail bed.

Thanks Cheryl I have removed the nails and went to a pharmacist who told me to wear gloves in water and I should be fine... They are sensitive of course but not sore like they were with the acrylic... Thank you for helping me and telling me the right thing to do coz I know some people would just tell me to get infills and I will be fine... I appreciate your honesty and it feels so weird to type now!! (less typos)

Enix,
i'm so happy you took them off. it really is the only way to start the healing process. just remember, once you become allergic to the acrylic you always will have that same reaction. i can be very blunt and to the point here most of the time, but you will always get the truth from me. way too many of us here have gone through this same painful process and been lied to by nail techs telling us that nothing's wrong and it must be our fault. just remember to moisturize every chance you get.
