Subject: vertical crack in thumbnail
Message: Hey folks. Fingernail issue here. In the last 2-3 years I have
developed horizontal ridges across both of my thumbnails.
Recently, a small vertical line right down the middle of the nail
has appeared. The most recent crack started at the base of my
nail and extends about half way up the nail. The cracks are
painful and sometimes bleed. I'm looking for any suggestions
as to what this may be and what I could do about it. Any help is
appreciated! thanks

Message: christian,
are your hands in water a lot? the first thing i think of is, they sound extremely dehydrated. have you tried putting neosporin on the cracks and wrapping them in a bandaid at night?

Message: Cheryl, my hands are in water quite a bit through out the day
which could lead to drying I suppose. But why only my thumb
nails? I will try the neosporin/bandaid treatment, and also
scheduled a doctors appt. for next week. We'll see what
happens.

Message: we ask that christain, because, we have seen on this forum, more than once, "regular doctors", i.e., internal medicine, general medicine, etc. just kind of "blow" patients off and not really take their nail problems seriously. if he does not take you seriously, keep looking. we are our own best advocates.
