Subject: Re:Slow Nail Grow due to Underactive Thyroid Probl

Message:
I made post on slow growing nails due to thyroid problems last year...

I made a mistake, I got Acrylic Nails put back on again because I can't stand the tenderness and the burning sensation when I put on nail hardeners polish. My nails have been weak all my life and I started wearing acrylics/gels 13+ years ago. I wanted to grow my natural nail but they keep breaking off in corners (causing my nail to rip off). My nails hurt when I put nail hardening polish on them. I used an Anti-fungal product to keep from getting fungus on my nails. I let my nails soak off completely (no buffing, no lifting). What can I do beside use the NGF formula to speed up the process of growth restoration? I have tried NailTek, ProStrong, Tips, Sally, Nail Magic, but nothing helps they still break even with the hardeners. My nails are soft and weak and hurt. They grow but break off badly. please help!!!

I am currently trying Onymyrrhe and Nail Advantage for Sensitive Nails to grow out my Acrylic Nails. I ran out of NGF, I need to order more. I read something about African Okoume tree oil to grow nails...I am going to do some research. I am not trying to promote any products but I am just trying to explain my problems. Please read post: Slow Nail Grow due to Underactive Thyroid Problems in this forum.

My secret to taking off acrylics FAST:

1. Put Hot Water into a bowl
2. Put Acetone Nail Polish Remover in another smaller bowl.
3. I put the smaller bowl over into the bowl with hot water and let my nails sink completely in Acetone for 15 minutes to 30 minutes and I am done.
I tried Non-Acetone remover, but they don't work to remove nails.

Hi Jackie,
I cringed reading your post. I can only imagine the pain :(
I don't have any answers to your questions about what else you might be able to use as I've never been in your shoes, however in my own experience, NGF was a godsend and the best thing I ever did for my nails.
Good luck to you!

Hi Jackie,

There are a few of us who post on this forum who have thyroid
problems - I'm one of them. I have Hashimoto's, the
autoimmune disease causing an underactive thyroid. I've never
given in to acrylics - I just used to hide my hands a lot which is
no solution! But the NGF is keeping my nails the most hydrated
they have ever been. I recently developed other serious health
problems, so my nails, skin and hair are all showing the signs.

So while I don't have any words of wisdom on any of the other
products, and my nails are growing slowly - they at least are
moisturized and growing at whatever pace they will right now -
when I don't pick at them!

I assume you have your thyroid levels checked regularly by a
primary care physician or endocrinologist, so again, I will
assume you're on the right dosage of Synthroid or whatever
medication you take. If it is Synthroid, please know that it can
deplete calcium over time, even contribute to osteoporosis (I've
been on Synthroid for 10 years and it saved my life!). I'm not
saying the calcium has anything to do with nail growth, I'm just
saying that diseases and their respective medications can throw
our bodies into imbalances and deficiencies - and don't be too
hard on yourself, and it never hurts to ask the doctor or a
nutritionist if there is anything else you can be doing just to
strengthen your overall health or address any nutritional
deficiencies that may or may not be contributing to your
situation.

I'm not a health practitioner, so I am only posting as someone
with perhaps a similar situation. Good luck and please post if
you try NGF again - there are so many of us with fragile nails
and cuticles who swear by it!

jackie,
yes, i do agree, you definitely need some more NGF. most of the products you mention will only dehydrate your nail bed even more. nail hardeners strengths are only in the hardener itself. they do not make the actual nail bed harder, and in most cases suck moisture right out of them. that's why they hurt when you put on the hardeners. the chemicals in them and the alcohol content is nail destroying. it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to completely recover a damaged nail from acrylic wear. 13 years is just way too long to subject your nail bed to abuse. your nail beds are sanded down every fill and every time you put them back on. quit with all the dehydrating products and just use the NGF. it's going to take some time and patience and they need the time to recover and it will not happen quickly. they need moisture put back in them, not sucked out.

My Dr. says the cause of my weakened nails is caused by psoriosis, which I have a history of on my feet. I wanted to cry when he told me. What is NGF? Sounds promising.

Hi Donna,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem with psoriosis on you fingernails now, too. You asked specifically what NGF is.. I've taken this straight from this site...

"Here's how it works. The formula stimulates blood circulation, and cell activity, therefore promoting a more rapid growth process. You don't stand to loose anything, but you do stand to gain beautiful, healthy, Natural Nails."

The product really addresses dryness. The NGF is very hydrating and moisturizing and many people will tell you that they noticed a difference in the first day, where their cuticles and nails just looked better, more hydrated.

I had very bad nails. Mine was from years of acrylic abuse and biting and picking at them. They were paper thin and I could literally tear them off in sheets. I tried several products, some very 'high end' and some well known less expensive products like Sally Hansons and Burts Bee's, but nothing helped. NGF was recommended by a friend on another sie and I swear to you, after the first application I could see a difference. I've been using NGF faithfully now for 5 months and have my own natural nails that look lovely and are very strong! Ridges I had for years are diminishing as well as 2 nails that had been disformed are healing and looking more and more normal.

As you use NGF daily, it protects from harmful moisture like water from washing hands, etc., and at the same time seals in the vital natural moistures needed to produce strong, healthy natural nails.

I hope this answers your questions and if I have misstated anything I'm sure someone will pop in and correct me or add their own experiences.
