Subject: Index Fingernail Mishap
Message: Unbelievable, but true...at Thanksgiving I smashed my index finger between frozen turkeys and lip of canned goods; lost a bit of cuticle skin and the "half moon" went black as the nail started growing out. The nail is now half grown out and my index finger is beginning to burn -- is there an infection in the finger. The burning seems to stop when I apply pressure, but is there something I can do to stop the burning...the nail isn't quite half way grown out. Thanks for your input.

Message: it doesn't sound like an infection, but there's always that possibility. is it inflammed or red at all? it could be the nail "trying" to grow out and the burning you are feeling is where the it got smushed when you whacked it.

Message: Thanks for your prompt reply. There is pressure from the new nail butting up to the bruised area; the new nail is growing slightly raised (there is a ridge between new growth/bruised nail), and the cuticle area is where the warmth/burning seems to be coming from; it is slightly inflamed. I think I'll soak it tonight in hot water & epsom salts and see how that goes(an old fashioned remedy, for sure). You have a great site!

Message: kj,
thanks. we're all just regular folks here trying to help. a lot of advice, we give, we've all gone through ourselves. after you've soaked it try some neosporin cream and a bandaid on it overnight. did you ever consider seeing a dr. about it?

Message: A trip to the dermatologist could be a good idea. It almost sounds like you have some inflammation or scar tissue under the nail and your nail might be "unwilling" to accommodate it. Your soaking idea might soften the nail a little. You should follow that up by rubbing olive oil or vitamin E oil into the nail a couple times daily to see if that helps. Otherwise, I even wonder if maybe a little cortisone shot wouldn't hurt.

Message: Presto, bingo...pressure gone, as well as redness, soreness and inflammation! Soaking, hot water, ointment and bandaid seemed to do the trick! Thanks to all for your great advice! Enjoy your day. ~kj
