Subject: slammed thumb in car door
Message: first of all.. I apologize for typos...
about two hours ago I slammed my thumb in the door..so bad that I had to reopen the door.. it had shut completely! (Thank God it wasn't locked!) at first it hurt so bad that I couldn't even cry or swear... it bled a little and turned purple. It also is about 2 times its normal size. I can bend it, but with considerable pain. I wear acrylic nails.. will this have helped it or hurt it? Also should I call my dr? I have surgery in two weeks on my nose and I need to be completely healthy for it. I am on antibiotics right now for a sinus infection, so I'm sure it will take care of any infection that may be caused on my nail/thumb. It hurts all the way down to my wrist.. even though I only slammed the top portion of my thumb (right above the knuckle) any help would be appreciated. I'm doing RICE and taking advil

Message: It will probably throb for several days. With the fake nails on you can't tell if there is blood under the natural nail. That needs to be fixed asap. Remove the acrylics and then see where your thumb is at. What type of surgery are you going in for?
If the thumb is still flexing then for sure you did not break it, but there could be a hairline fracture. You may want to get it X-rayed just to be certain. Keep the RICE going. Also try to keep it raised above the heart to lessen the throbbing. Please keep us posted on your progress. Take care not to re-injure that thumb. Enough pain for on month!

Message: Thank you for your quick reply. I have a severly deviated septum, so I'm getting septioplasty as well as work on my turbines and sinuses. It's a 2 hour operation and I have to stay overnight (I'm already scared enough about it lol)
The thing is with removing the acrylic, I'm not sure how sanitary the places are around here. I also have french manicure so there's no blood underneath it

Message: No blood under the nail is a good thing. Is the thumb all purple where it got smashed?
I am sure you have a fine surgeon, don't be frightened.
If you will do a search here on the forum for acrylic removal, you can find out how to remove them at home without the fear of the "salon"....
You just need acetone and time......lots of time! lol
Keep us informed on what you decide.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with you for the surgery.

Message: liz,
i would really suggest you at least remove the acrylic on your thumbnail. just soak it in acetone remover and it will melt off. it takes about 20 to 30 minutes. my guess would be, since you completely closed the door on the nail that you probably injured the matrix of your own nail. the acrylic needs to come off to give it a chance to heal and to see if your nail will be permanently injured or not. keeping it covered up with acrylic is not the best thing in the world for it now. i'm surprised your nose doctor hasn't said the acrylics need to come off for your surgery. it's always been a question they've asked me beforehand. the anesthesiologist always needed to be able to see my nail beds to monitor my oxygen levels along with the little "pinchy" thing they attach to your finger. just think about how much better you're going to be after you're all healed. two people i know-a relative and a friend, say what a difference in breathing, sleeping, no more snoring, less sinus infections and headaches. you'll do fine. just go into it with the attitude that it is going to be uncomfortable for a while, but it will get better and you will have the benefits from the surgery that will last a lifetime.

Message: thank you guys so much for your kind words. They really mean a lot to me :) I was prepared to have my nails off in the coming weeks before the surgery anyhow... I guess it'll just be sooner rather than later lol.

Message: If your finger is throbbing, you need to release the blood from under the nail.
My advise is a brand new drill bit and a powerful drill. It will only take about a second for the drill bit to go through your nail and then you will be in paradise. No more throbbing!!!!!!
Be sure to soak it in hydrogen peroxide afterwards and then alot of bacatricin. It may not stop bleeding for a couple of days but just keep it covered.
Your welcome in advance.
