Subject: CA Wildfires

Message:
I live at the base of the mountains here and during those fires you're talking about that took place a couple years ago Jill, we would stand out on our patio and watch the flames. Eventually we had to go in because it was impossible to breathe through all the ash. Our yards were literally covered in ash.
We lost a lot of plants and our pool was really, really bad. I took pictures of it from my driveway and backyard and will dig them out if anyone is interested in seeing them. Let me know and I'll drop them in the email to you.
It's quite something.

EEEWWWW! Soot in the pool. I guess you had to flock it after that. What a work load. I hated that about owning an in ground pool. That is just too much work, and the chemicals are way expensive. Especially during some of our summers. It would cook out the chlorine in a days time.
I just don't get how anyone out there can stay even a bit on the sane side. If its not the Santa Ana winds, with the raging fires, and droughts, then the earth just opens up and gulps you down. Too spooky for me.
But I guess a lot of people think that about our hurricane prone areas too. Especially after the Katrina and Rita fiasco! Ugly step sisters they were! But I have NEVER wanted to live in a bowl below sea level myself. Love the music, hate the location.

We too live close to the mountains and a couple years ago there was the Hayman fire. The smoke was visible for miles (the fire moved down the mt. range toward Denver) and our house smelled like smoke for days.
I would love to see your pictures Moi if you get a chance.

Moi emailed me her photos and they are absolutely amazing - so powerful, frightening, awesome all at the same time. Kasi, you will definitely appreciate them since you've gone through something so similar.

I've never had a wildfire fire come that close to my home, but when I lived in a condo in Los Angeles, the unit next to mine caught on fire (due to the owner's negligence - grrr) and my unit had lots of smoke damage and I had to evacuate for awhile. That's when I started thinking about what would I take with me if I had to evacuate again. It's a big decision - and one that has changed for me over time as the things I need to survive these days have changed (now I need special medications and food - back then I needed proof of the work I did to gain new clients).

Having grown up with earthquakes, I was so nonchalant about them until the big Northridge earthquake in L.A. - that was so frightening that I've respected earthquakes ever since. A friend of mine from L.A. moved to a part of Missouri known as Tornado Alley and she has described going through tornadoes and I just wouldn't even know what to do - or in a hurricane either. I guess we just adapt to what we're used to.

I guess we're pretty lucky out here. No hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires, even snakes. The cold weather is the only thing we have to put up with and this year we have not even had snow.

Jill, were you in LA for the Northridge quake?
I couldn't believe my eyes when we went down there to drop of food and clothes, etc., that we had collected. THAT single incident is what got my rear in gear and got me putting together my emergency preparedness stuff. I do NOT want to have to stand in line waiting for food for my kids while the govt is pushing red tape.

Moi,

I lived in Westwood during the Northridge earthquake. Westwood wasn't terribly damaged but nearby Santa Monica was. But even though most of my bookcases and furniture was bolted to the walls, some of my bedroom furniture flew across the room, I held on to a flimsy little desk during the earthquake so I wouldn't fly across the room, and several lamps and collectibles broke.

I always kept flashlights throughout my condo, so when I was finally able to get out of my bedroom, down the stairs and to my front door, I joined the many neighbors who were in the main hallway. But I was the only one with usable flashlights! And my crazy neighbors immediately lit candles, which is a big no-no until you are sure there are no gas leaks.

Given that the Northridge earthquake was the next big event after the L.A. (Rodney King) riots, I was sure that L.A. was about to be the center of Armaggeddon! Just too many scary events in a row!

Jill

It's so interesting talking to friends from different areas of the country and all our different sorts of natural disasters - hurricanes, earthquakes, heat fires, etc.! I'm with Cheryl, thinking we aren't so bad off here in the Northeast, except that we have had a few doozy icestorms.

In my state, which is Texas, we had several grass and wildfires near my hometown. Fortunately, they were minor, and I'm lucky because I have never been told to evacuate.

They happened because Texas received hardly any rain in the period of a few months. A few weeks ago, we finally got some rain. But we're still under a burn ban and there's still a fire danger in where I live.
