Subject: still here in the cold south!

Message:
alright, i came down here for some warmth-where is it? i want to know! could be home shoveling, i suppose. john and i are headed to the "big easy" tomorrow, for the weekend, but the laptop will be with me and i will have high speed once again! everyone thinks we're crazy, but i'm figuring maybe 80 gazillon "mardi gras-ers" won't be there this year. may be our only shot at whatever sanity is left there! i will be in the french quarter, not the lower 9th ward. in the meantime, i have developed a toothache and need a root canal when i return home to NY,BUT,i did see a dentist today and have painkillers and antibiotics-so, there will be little alcohol consumption and more eating! how's that for determination. you do what ya gotta do!

Cheryl,

We are having excess heat in Southern California, so I will get Ruth to join me in blowing hot air your way (and no, don't even start with jokes about all the hot air from California!!).

It will be so interesting to hear your firsthand report on how things are in New Orleans. I realize that the French Quarter was impacted the least and many restaurants reopened fairly quickly. But you never know if the news stories are really conveying everything correctly.

Have some yummy chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde for me! Good luck with the tooth - I can't drink because of antibiotics either, but ice cream is always soothing for a bad tooth!

jill,
thanks for the thoughts of warmth! just bad timing on our part. i think the only things the french quarter is missing are the visitors and their money, right now. fat tuesday isn't for another 2 weeks, and there's not enough money or free hotel rooms for us, to be there for that! i'm not a coffee drinker, but i will have a few ben-yays(sorry, don't know the correct spelling) for you though!

The Edmonton Humane Society went to New Orleans and helped rescue stranded animals and hopefully reunite them with their owners. They brought back 3 dogs and were keeping them until their owners could be found. If they couldn't find them, they were adopting them out. They showed one in particular on TV, a medium sized brown dog of no specific breed, named Dixie, who was adopted by someone here. I don't know if they ever found the other dogs' owners.

Lorraine,

Isn't it heartwarming that so many rescue organizations went to New Orleans? On the local news here in San Diego, they showed some of the Katrina animal victims that were brought to our shelters, and many have been reunited with their original owners. It just breaks my heart when animals are in distress, but I love those happy endings!

Well Cheryl, my lovely, it IS February! And the seasons would dictate cooler temperatures. But now that I think about your timing, I must say I am a bit concerned in that regard. Course any times a good time to come back to the south. Ain't it girl?

I heard on CNN the pilots were considering strike again. What in the CRAP is up with the management of Delta? Are they ALL that stupid, or are they all just crazy?????

I think you and John will have a great time this weekend. Go enjoy every moment! And no dancing on the bar for you this year, what with those drugs in your system! {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{lol}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

we're here. quite a scene of destruction driving in on I-10. the further south we came the more blue roofs and white trailers. trees uprooted everywhere and the neighborhoods along the interstate were just in ruin. pile after pile of rubble. you could see the water marks on the houses. one thing to see it on tv, quite more real in person. i just couldn't watch the tv anymore, after the hurricane, about the animals left behind. so many "disposable" little souls people left behind, some by choice, some not. anyway, it was nice seeing the big banner on the superdome about the re-opening date. the roof was patched and repaired. we are about a mile from the quarter, so hopefully it won't be too loud here! we got our room free for the weekend from our hilton points. we've never stayed somewhere free before-gotta like that! we don't know what's going on with delta. you can make yourself nuts about it. this might be our last vacation for a while. that's alright, it's been one hell of a ride for 17 years!!! i'm trying to not stay "whacked out" on the painkillers. i don't like feeling that way, so i am just relying on my tylenol until i just can't stand it! my dentist might not be able to see me for a while, so i might just have to deal with it for now. arggggghhhh! alright, i going for beads and oysters-see ya'll later.

I'm there with you for the oysters. Talk about good southern food! (well OK maybe not southern!) But absolutely GOOD! I am jealous! Have some fun. You guys have earned you *free* room. I promise you that you have paid for the room over the years of collecting all those points. So have a ball. And catch some beads!

Cheryl - wow, it sure must be enlightening to see the remnants in person vs. on screen, a bit like Ground Zero, huh?

Hope that tooth calms down. Have you picked up some Sensodyne toothpaste? Sometimes that can take a little of the edge off the nerve. What miserable timimg for you - almost like trying to plan a vacation around your period.

many parts look like a bomb went off. just got back from bourbon street and it was pretty mellow.little wind damage here and there. some restaurants haven't re-opened, but i would say about 95% looks open and ready. they need some visitors. it's been a long day of stabbing tooth pain followed by moments of no pain. that'll wear you down after a while! thanks for the suggestion lynn. i have been rubbing sensodyne on it, but it doesn't last too long. extra strength tylenol works for a while too. i will pop the "real" stuff when i just can't take it, i guess. life is mostly timing, indeed.i'd rather have my period though-it's a piece of cake!! barbara, the oysters were simply divine-even if i had to chew on one side!

I can picture you at the bar! One cheek out to there from the tooth ache, the other cheek out to there filled with oysters! Oh I wish I were with you guys at that oyster bar!
When my children were little, we would go to my Dads oyster beds and get a bushel any time we wanted some fresh. We usually just rinsed off the mud, poured the bushel out on the picnic table on the river bank, pop open those beauties and the children would stand around the edge of the table, like little birds, with mouths wide, waiting on their next bite of fresh oyster. YUMMMMMMM! Oysters and beer! Now thats living!
